Which "value" guys keep producing in higher leagues?

Curious which players that are reasonably accessible in Bronze and Silver leagues continue to produce in Gold and Diamond? Thinking mostly of the 5k PP type guys.

I've seen Dierker, Simmons, rookie Tulo mentioned as still producing. And a lot of lefty SP apparently not do so well as they move up?

Any batter with contact 70+ plays well.
Any starting pitcher with movement 70+ is worthwhile.
Any relievers with stuff 110+ is worthwhile, sometimes they have this level stuff against a particular handedness, which makes them useful as a specialist only.

Shane Victorino has been pretty good for me - a bronze and silver legend with ~8 WAR and he has held his own through Diamond with 4+ WAR in all seasons except for one where he had ~3WAR. He is a true "value" guy at ~150PP at the moment.

I am having success with Jose Oquendo a silver 73 that won the batting title in Gold for me last season.

Brooks Robinson, silver 78 has been a stud at 3B and worth about 2.5 to 3 WAR.

Matty Alou a bronze 64 has been one of my favorite guys also putting up between 1.5 and 2.5 WAR in left field.

Pete Rose, silver 75 has also put up between 2 and 4 WAR each year in Gold.

This doesn't answer your specific question, but...

Willie Wilson 1982 69 can be had for 40-something points and is the best value in the game for me. When I first got promoted to Gold I saw an opponent had him and he'd produced close to 3 WAR in Gold for several years.
I immediately bought him and he gave me 2.5 for two seasons and then 2.4 in Diamond before I benched him by getting Ruth in a pack (that was... unexpected). He'd gotten up to a 95 in LF, with great SB totals.

Not the best by any means, but a crazy value. Outperforms the 2001 Rookie Sensation Ichiro (though not on defense), for sure. I've had both for several seasons on various teams and Wilson is the best bang for the buck card I've seen.

For 5K you're talking about a different type of player, but I've had Wilson start in the WS for me in Gold. Spend your points wisely!

I used Rookie Tulo and Jody Davis even after I made it to Perfect, but personally I would not include either on that list. You could do worse, but you can also do a lot better without much difficulty.

I would look more at the likes of Omar Vizquel (aka the poor man's [78 ovr] Wizard) or my personal favorite utility IF/OF who always finds a way to outperform his ratings, Jim Gilliam. The aforementioned Willie Wilson is another great inclusion.

How much does Vizquel go for right now?

Tony Fernandez is a Vizquel clone, he goes for about half that if you're truly squeezing out value

Mark Belanger is a 60 and makes money when he wins a Gold Glove, which is nearly every year for me. He's usually around 2.2-3.5 WAR.

For me, the most underappreciated player is Billy Hamilton. He gets lots of PP for stealing bases and also wins Gold Gloves for me--basically every year I started him.

Both these guys will hit around .260 if you set them to maximize 'Bunt for Hit; It seems to me that modern thinkers moronically set their team to maximize shifts and that allows terrific bunters to get on. With Hamilton, thats like sticking him on second every time.

Great info - really appreciate all the replies.

My team is pretty much beating up on the Bronze league I'm in and there aren't any more obvious holes. I've been upgrading to better players who are still relatively cheap like Dierker, JD Martinez and Machado. Most of my roster is good silver players, gradually including more of the affordable golds.

I'm trying to figure out if the cards in that "next tier" of 2k-5k will still be usable for multiple levels, or if I'd be better off saving for fewer but bigger upgrades (5k+) that I'll be able to stick with longer. Curious what those who have already been through this would recommend, both generally and any specific players.

I think since you are still in bronze, you dont need to rush to fill out 2-5k cards. Another option is waiting until you get major upgrades - like the 5-12k starting pitcher tier level for example. Or a couple really solid two way offense/defense players. So instead of getting 5 ~5k SPs, get 2 or 3 for 7-10k range (lot of good historical golds and cheap non live diamonds that do well enough through diamond at least from what I can tell) - and then keep your best 2 or 3 SPs you already have, since they probably will hold up a bit if they are doing as well as you say in bronze. If you are really killing it in bronze, with a great record and decent playoff run, you can get another 5k PP at end of season with gold score achievement, playoff points, and maybe some awards.

Basically the point is that if you have some good silvers already, there might not be that big of an upgrade to some decent 2-5k golds. Might as well go straight to some of the better golds (5-10k range) and some of the cheaper but still very useful diamonds ~10k.

I'm glad someone mentioned him, he had his best season for me the first season my packs only team got promoted to Gold. (something like 4.5 WAR)

Jose Oquendo has been mentioned as well, he's been too good to replace for me even in Gold.

I spent 3 seasons in the perfect league with an all Indians team and 78 Len Barker was always the best SP on my roster. Granted he can cost anywhere from 4k-6k, but he outperformed my 89 Score, 88 Feller, 85 Wynn, and my gold Uhle for those 3 seasons.

Agree on Fernandez. I've had him since day one, and the last 7 in Diamond. I keep trying to replace him, but he hits well, gets on base, and plays great defense.

77 Mattingly was good, too, but I upgraded him a few seasons back.

Luis Aparico, Kevin Pillar and Ichiro are some one the best value bronze cards imo i still use them in perfect

My Mattingly can't hit lefties to save his life.
