I wonder if this should be something that is restricted to the post-World War II era. College was a luxury for most families and relatively few people enrolled prior to the GI Bill. There were, of course, college-educated baseball players before the 1940s, such as Christy Mathewson (Bucknell), Frankie Frisch (Fordham), and Lou Gehrig (Columbia), but not many, and college baseball programs weren't viewed as potential feeders for the professional leagues until years later.
