Centennial League first half of 1905 complete

The CBL has reached the all-star break of the 1905 season. The league page can be viewed at:

First half observations

AL PENNANT RACE

the PHILADELPHIA A's are clearly the team to beat this year. They got hot going into the all-star break and pulled away from the pack in the AL. Eddie Plank has surpassed Cy Young as the AL's premier pitcher and the rest of the A's pitching staff is competent if not spectacular. Lajoie is having a bit of an off year so far batting "only" .312. If he heats up in the second half watch out. Matty Mcintyre is having a career year at .326 and the A's seem solid at every position except maybe catcher.

The HIGHLANDERS and SENATORS are both 6 games back of the A's. New York is a great offensive team with 2B Bill "Wagon Tongue" Keister batting .388 and other great young offensive players like Roger Bresnahan,Bill Monroe,Grant Johnson and Mike Donlin the Highlanders easily lead the majors in batting average and runs scored. Pitching has been a problem though. They drafted two great looking pitching prospects in Jose Munoz and Irv Young this year but both of them have not lived up to expectations so far. If the Highlanders can pitch better in the 2nd half they may make a run at the A's. The Senators are a surprise, After finishing last in 1904 they are 11 games over .500. They have a good pitching staff led by Ed Walsh which thrives in pitcher friendly Griffith Stadium, they're getting career offensive years from several players like 1B Tim Jordan and 2B Danny Murphy. They are also excellent defensively. This team does seem to be over achieving but they are solid enough that they may continue to surprise.

Over in the NL the League leading PIRATES have suffered a huge blow losing Honus Wagner to injury for 9 weeks. The Flying Dutchman was having his best season ever at .359 44 RBI 27 SB. Holding the lead in the tough NL without Wagner's offense won't be easy but the Bucs are getting great seasons from Ginger Beaumont (.341) and Lefty Davis (.330). They also have a good veteran pitching staff. Sam Leever (14-5 1.72) and Jack Chesbro (15-4 1.72) have both been phenomenal, after breaking their fans hearts last year losing 8 of their last 9 games costing them the NL pennant the Pirates had a great first half. They have two very good teams chasing them however. The Phillies,Pirates and Cubs have finished in the top 3 spots in the NL every year of the CBL's existance and it looks like this year willl be no different. That the CUBS are only 4 games out this year is a little surprising given their very poor offence (12th in the majors with a .248 average). They've got a great 1st half from Jack [Please give me some run support] Taylor (9-9 1.99) and Rube Waddell (14-4 2.28) but the Cubbies may need to make a trade for a bat if they want to hang around with the Pirates and Phillies in the second half. And speaking of the PHILLIES,the two-time defending world champions are lurking just 5 games out. Essentially the same team as the last couple of years, the Phillies still sport a deep pitching staff led by Doc White (13 wins 1.90 ERA) and a potent offense led by the deadly duo of Ed Delahanty (.342 ) and Elmer Flick (.308)

Rookie Watch:

Ty Cobb (NYG) .265 1 23 24 SB
Bruce Petway (CLE) .294 0 28
Grant Johnson (NYA) .268 1 53
Ed Reulbach (BSN) 9-6 2.75

2nd year Rising star watch:

Bill Monroe (NYA) .342 4 43
Pop Lloyd (BSN) .274 1 34
Ed Walsh (WAS (10-7 3.06)

"The tough luck club for pitchers"

Clark Griffith (CHA) 9-9 1.95
Jack Taylor (CHN) 9-9 1.99
Addie Joss (BRK) 14-10 2.12
Rube Foster (SLN) 10-7 2.21
Jack Cronin (DET) 10-10 2.37
Cy Young (BSA) 10-10 2.45

On to the second half!

UPDATE: July 31st 1905 :http://wave.prohosting.com/cbal/cbl/

The surprising Senators got red hot in July and moved to within 3 games of the A's in the AL. The Highlanders pulled off the blockbuster trade of the year acquiring the immortal Cy Young from the Red Sox for outfielder Cy Seymour and young pitching prospect Red Ames. Young went 7-0 and won pitcher of the month for his new team but the higlanders still find themselves in third place.

Over in the NL the Pirates didn't crumble without Wagner however the young Boston Beaneaters had a great July and moved into second place. The Beaneaters are currently in a second place tie with the Phillies 6 games back of the Pirates who get Wagner back in 3 weeks. The Cubs slumped in July and fell to 12 games out. The Phillies Ed Delahanty got his 3000th career hit in July.
