first year draft and compensation pick question

so this years draft seems pretty crappy, i was wondering if its a good idea and if it works to pick impossible selections and i will get the same pick the next year, just looking for clarification that this is how it works

i know you get 1st rounder back (1-3?)... you'd be better off googling the details than relying on a reply here.. even if someoen gives a better reply, you better look it up for yourself. i'm 99% certain this follows RL rules.

For the first few rounds, you get a pick that's one behind your current pick. So if you had the 14th pick in the first round, next year you get the 15th. However, I don't know that it works beyond round 3.
