Shut Down The Ace?

It's almost September and my Giants are totally out of contention in their division. They're also 7 1/2 back in the wildcard and have lost their last 4 games. Post season is looking extremely unlikely at this point.

Bumgarner strained his rotator cuff about 3 weeks back. He's on the DL but will be eligible to return before the end of the season. However, I'm thinking the smart decision is to shut him down for the rest of the year. He started out the season on the DL and now this latest injury make me think it's not worth the risk.

What do other OOTP GMs think? Do you sit key players toward the end of the season when out of contention for the playoffs? Have you seen an injury like this turn into an even worse one later on?

Cheers

H

If you are out of it, I would not risk it....shut him down and look toward next season unless you think he has a shot at some award. I had a similar situation with Corey Kluber, he was on the DL with a back injury and able to return and maybe make 2 starts before the season ended (there were 12 games left). We were 10 back of the White Sox in the Division and 8 back of the Angels for the 2nd Wild Card, so I decided to activate him and let him make one more start.....he left in the 3rd inning with a lower back injury.....herniated disc in lower back and ended up missing all of Spring Training and almost 2 months into the next season because I gave him 3 rehab starts. He never bounced back fully from this injury and ended up being my 3rd starter the following season.

Ouch! Well then I will definitely heed your warning! Thanks for the advice

You could always activate him and use him specifically as a pinch-hitter.

That's an idea. He's hit a couple of HRs for me this season. Thanks!

I did this with Michael Lorenzen when he had a forearm strain in September in my 2018 season. I shut him down pitching wise for the remainder of the season but used him as a PH and a late-inning first base replacement in some blowout games.
