If I call up an elite prospect too early, will his development be ruined?
The title is my question. I am curious to see if there is a difference in development between a) letting a prospect mash minor league pitching, or b) letting him struggle against major league pitching.

I have noticed if the guy is truly an elite prospect it typically doesn't matter if he struggles. It's the guys who are just good prospects, but not great, that I seem to ruin by rushing. |

The answer in OOTP, which is great, is that you just don’t know. There is definitely an element of randomness to it.

I go by personality and morale a lot when making these decisions. If a guy is doing great but also seems to be perfectly content in the minors mashing away and isn't a big personality, I'm not gonna rush him up.

Ultimately the goal is to win at the ML level so if he can help your team try to be patient with him at the ML level - sometimes it takes 1 yr for things to click so don't lose patience after just 1 season. The only time I let a spec sit in AAA mashing is if I have no room for him at the ML level and nor do I want to trade him. As mentioned before there is an element of randomness to this game.

I don't know how you guys do it. I either need ML players or don't and rarely see a situation where I can promote or not promote someone based on anything other than ML need.

No magic bullet with this one...I agree pitchers seem to be more sensitive to being rushed but I've had 24 and 25 year olds that still don't ever seem to be ready while I've had some decent 22 year olds light it up in the majors and then regress a bit and then recover (usually). Just like in real life I guess.

If the guy is performing at an acceptable level then question is answered. If he's struggling, send him back down. It happens all the time IRL. Most guys take at least of couple of tries at the MLB level before they can stick.
