Nice line. I do wonder if this was an OOTP game would people have a problem with him not getting a shot at a 4th HR.

I'd put money that he goes 0-4 the next game with 3 K's.

He's been good but he's due for an off day. Based on how he started the year I'm really happy for him but part of me wants the Cards to trade him at deadline while he's hot.

I'm a huge Carpenter fan, and his early struggles were easily explained when looking at his periphs. A ton of bad strikes called, and hitting into bad luck. He's gone the opposite direction, but he's a 130 wRC+ hitter. I'd rather have him than Anthony Rizzo at first base (though Rizzo is younger). |

I can’t believe Shildt took him out of the game! He could have gotten 6 hits or 4 homers or both!

I was at Hard Hittin’ Mark Whiten’s 4 dinger game in Cincinnat. I wish Carp would have had the shot.

See, this is why I'm not all that high on Shildt. You don't take a guy with three homers out early, unless he's hurt. It's like taking a guy throwing a perfect game out in the 8th.

Was only watching the Friday game out of the corner of my eye at this point, but a friend of mine who was paying more attention said that after Carpenter's final at-bat (not Carp, that's reserved for a different Carpenter) was shifting back and forth from leg to leg like he had tweaked something,
He speculated that was why he was taken out of the game. Although, he seemed just fine today. Just throwing that out there Edit: From another poster, I saw that Carpenter said he was OK with being removed from the game. Who knows. Last edited by rink23; 07-22-2018 at 12:32 AM. |

Has a 216 wRC+ since May 16th, .494 wOBA
Easily the best in baseball since then. |

He showed how to beat the shift in his first at bat today. He laid a perfect bunt down the third base line for a single, coming around to score on a ground-rule double and sac fly.

And just a few days after I posted this, he took out a guy pitching a no-hitter. In his MLB debut. God, I'm starting to wish Matheny was still around.

Edit: Poncedeleon isn’t a spring chicken either. His arm has a lot of mileage on it....

Yeah, but the guy had a chance to do something that had never been done before. There are certain occasions when you need to set that pitch count crap aside, and that was one of them. It just seemed like screwing over the fans and Poncedeleon to me.

I agreed with the Schlidt's hook of Poncedeleon.
Sure it would have been a great story, but the guy was gassed. At 116 pitches, he probably would have needed 130+ to finish it. Back in 2012, Johan Santana posted the only no-hitter in Mets history -- against the Cardinals and there was a Carlos Beltran foul ball that would have been ruled a double if there had been replay -- but it took him 134 pitches to finish it off. He was never the same again. Wiser to let Poncedeleon live to pitch another day, |

I'm sorry, but if guys can't even make it to 150 pitches in a game, there needs to be a serious rethink about how they're being coached and trained. Seriously, this is getting a bit ridiculous.

It is unrealistic to think that every pitcher should be able to throw 150 pitches in a game. Every pitcher wasn’t able to do that in the 70’s either.
