would you sign this guy??

I am in the fork in the road I could use a left fielder or right fielder as the players I have are decent at the outfield positions. Although getting thin a bit. Admittedly I am tempted to try to sign him

I'd offer a higher AAV and shorter term. Might also toss in a vesting option since he's older and more likely to be injured.

That’s crazy good numbers for his age. Less than 10% of your budget of !!! $286,000,000.00!!! I’d say yes.

yes I figured out how to push the owner for a higher budget as I been playing this game since 2000 or 2001 …. you begin to learn a few things over the years ..
I tried to sign him to a 1 year with team option with 1mil buyout and he balked and wanted 22 mil
I see Pitt and Boston trying to sign him as well

I love the player and have tried to trade for him several seasons ago wasn't able to get him almost glad I didn't get him for he wouldn't be as good as he is now … glad he broke Bonds record and had 4 players that challenged it but all failed but this player

No, too old, unless you have slowed ageing IMO this guy will be an albatross like Martin and Tulo are to the Jays this year. You are basically paying for 1 maybe 2 years.

maybe offer 2 years, 3rd year as a team option. He looks like his numbers are already sliding a bit and at that age, he probably only has 1 or 2 good years, i suspect. But yes, his track record is impressive and i can see why you'd be tempted to give him a shot.

Retirement Risk

I would offer 6 years
$10 mil, 10 mil, 10 mil, 20 mil, 35 mil, 35 mil
You may pay the $20 mil. I have done this a few times. I was only burned once and for one season.

How close are you to a championship? If this guy can put you over the top, I say go get him. Otherwise, I'd avoid him unless you can sign him for 1-2 years max.

No. Way too old. Could entirely end up being a turd before his payouts have reached eight figures.

Or he makes him retire. And since he said in the cheater thread that he doesn't consider it cheating when he cheats in a single player game, that is exactly what this is amounting to, and it is also exactly what I mentioned over there about cheating first, and then pointing out your oh-so-great achievements. Which are nothing more than cheats. If that is what you're doing, you should also disclose it.

By the way, if I'm a player guaranteed 35 million at age 42, I don't care whether I can still play or my bad ankles, knees, and necks make a wheelchair more appealing than my uniform. I'm not retiring.

it was what i was getting at, before u made it obvious. irl, a player would never leave 35M on the table. in the game, i dont know. if it does happen (on its own) and if its predictable, that would be using an exploit.

I have seen it, including once on my team. #46 from my signature forfeited his contract for his age 40 season and retired because his age 39 season was pretty awful, and so was my team then. It wasn't the league equivalent of $35m though, probably closer to $12-14m in today's baseball economy.

At least he didn't ruin his Hall of Fame case by retiring.

Wasn't there a Royals pitcher a few years back(name escapes me) who walked away from $12million, but few and far between.

most likely he only has 1 good year if that with the cubbies, so be happy.

it's impossible to get much for a mid-30's guy, let alone 37-38yo. he's a ticking timebomb to turn into a dumpster fire of a payroll hog.

stepehen drew walked away from something approaching ~10m/year to test FA and got signed after the compensation deadilin in ~june. maybe that's who you ar ethinking of? players gamble about their worth ... sometimes they err.
