What does checking the Non-guaranteed check box in a player’s Salary Data under Contract Type do?

I've searched Google, the forums, and the online guide and didn't come up with an answer.

It means you can release the player without owing the remaining dollars on the contract.

Is that for any point in his remaining contract or only at the end of the current season?

The entire contract. There may be a residual due depending upon the settings for your league.
