Setting up your own team

I have created a league with historical teams, some championship calibre others not so much. How can I set up my own team with players from different years? I thought I would be able to do it by setting up for an inaugural draft, however it grouped all teams into the draft and does not allow players brought in from outside those teams.

if you want specific players you need to import them.

lehman's id? have to search forums... baseball-reference.com is ~nearly the same form the URL from what i know.. there may be some deviation though.

some combo of last name, first initial and a #, typically. you can see it in the URL as you look them up on baseball reference... google ootp forums too, there may be a better link

as far as a draft.. hope you backed it up before that point, or the players are no longer on their teams..

a draft won't be for "1" team, unless you edit the order and exclude all the other teams for some reason.. but if that's the case why not just turn comissioner mode on and assign the players you want to your team. no difference.

If I don't do a player draft the system will automatically fill my team with fictional players. At what point am I able to import the players?

not sure if you have option to import directly to teal.. would be in "available actions" from depth charts or player list, if so..

otherwise, go to Free Agents, and click Available actions and import a historical player... check manual for details and minutiea. check forums for how to look up players.. .like i said i *think baseball reference uses 99% the same id's (from url after you find player.. pmartinez02 i think is pedro martinez etc..)

import them, assign to a team.. give a contract etc... turn comisisoner mode on in order to do these things by hand.

if you want to start a league with historical players, that's during game creation... can do random debut or import specific teams from a specific year. or, do a specific year of mlb and it'll all be there pre-made... the custom stuff will tkae some effort / trial and error if it's your first time. i have not done much historical stuff, but all of this is possible.

players from different years will be a bit more hand-tailored unless just a random debut league.

in the game, there are two .csv files, one for major and minor leagues. (in my game they are located at: D:\Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 19\stats - but in a normal set up they are probably on your "C" drive ...) Those two files (they open with Apache open office - a free program) contain all the players in the historical games. You can find their player ID (the one used by the game) as well as their debut and final years in those files. (Column B is their player ID and column Z is their debut year.)

then as NoOne said in the previous post, go to free agent page, import historical players. It's very important to get the ID EXACT. Any slight deviation, a wrong space, a wrong or missed letter or number, and it won't import, or won't import the player you're trying to get

best of luck. if this ain't too clear, let us know and we'll try to be clearer ....

To get the players on the team you want you must delete all players first. Then use a text file to import the players. I suggest you do one team at a time and verify. Also turn off AI trading unless you want it on. Search the 2019 and 2018 general forums for my user name. I've answered questions about importing recently.

This game certainly doesn't make it easy. After making them all free agents I had to then sign them all. The season is ready to start and Max Lanier is still holding out while Keith Hernandez had to go through several weeks of wooing. He started out with an offer in '82 of 200K and ended up with a contract for more than a million.

Is there a way as commissioner that I can just assign free agents to my team?

Yes.

In Commissioner mode, go into the player editor of a player you want to assign to your team. Under Team Information (left hand side), you should then be able to assign the player to your league and your team. You can give him specific contract details under Salary Data near the bottom of the left hand side.

if you want to hand-tailor each team with specific players from different teams and different eras, it will require effort.

what micro said is probably the best way to go, but you'd need to know how to setup the files and such, which you'd have to learn on your own through existing threads in the forums and mimicing existing "../data/stats/" files. then import historical players in game as you normally would, but select your customized file instead of one of the default ones.

either way, if you want somethign that custom and not random, you'd have to setup each team with each player you wanted.

you can do a random debut leauge or specific year imported teams from history of any combination by selecting them from a list during game creation process... or afterward using import historical player option in game.

screenshot shows menu after selecting import historical players in a game (free agent list) then you see an option to select a custom file and it even tells you the format required of that file) it's from ootp18, but will look similar in 19.

You must specify what team is the destination otherwise the players are in the free agent pool. This is an example for the Chicago Cubs.

bankser01, 1959,chc
ansonca01, 1886,chc
willibi01, 1965,chc
sandbry01, 1984,chc
santoro01, 1967,chc
cavarph01, 1945,ia
hackst01, 1945,chc
hartnga01, 1930,chc
gracema01, 1995,ia

Ernie Banks from 1959 is on the Chicago Cubs. Mark Grace from 1995 is on the Iowa Cubs, the AAA team. The "chc" and "ia" are the abbreviations for the team used on the league setup screen.

Thank you everyone for the answers. The tip about getting the player file name from baseball reference really worked well.

Next question would be, I have the historical stadiums mod loaded. Yet when I go to my new team it assigns a generic random stadium. When I go to the dropdown menu to select a different stadium, it only offers those currently in use by the league. How am I able to get a specific stadium from history for my team, ie Connie Mack Stadium from 1950.
