Hows this for strategy?

Sign the best free agents to 10 year deals with 5-10 million or so for the first year then 50 million each year after, then trade them once you see their skills declining for top prospects rinse and repeat?

It only works if can find a taker in those trades, and the AI tends to be smarter than that. If you want be in Commissioner Mode and cheat, that's a different story, but trying to dump a salary for top prospects is a hard thing to do.

It also assumes that you have the budget to spend that money. Again, you can be Commissioner Mode and cheat, but I don't find any fun in rigging things that much in my favor.

Sometimes I can barely get the ai to give me a prospect with bench potential at best other times i can get some 5 star bats or pitchers with 4+ years of arbitration. If a player has declined then usually I get lucky if i'm able to get some type of minor leaguer with no contract, if i trade a guy who is still in his prime I can get some top notch young talent. I was able to trade a 4.5 star starting pitcher for a 5 star 2b with only 2 years of mlb experience. The 4.5 star pitcher had 7 years at 37 million left and was 32 so I dunno if the ai needs to be tweaked or not. I just know when I clicked shop for a trade with him I was stunned to see that type of offer. I was just looking to dump for any minor league contract.
