Error in Career History
Played as GM and coach of the Seals/Barons/North Stars. I took over the Sharks on expansion. After the move to Dallas my career history showed as if I managed Dallas all those years.
Also of note Gretzky's first NHL year said he played with Indianapolis? He actually ended up with Hartford somehow. |

Looks like the personnel career history is just using the most recent name of the franchise, unlike the player history. I'll see if it can be switched to the year-specific one easily.
With Gretzky, are you sure you're not seeing his year in the WHA? I just checked a couple of historical saves and his history is working normally, even when he goes from Indianapolis to an NHL team. |

Gretzky History
Here's a summary of his history
78-79 Cincinatti WHA 79-80 Indianapolis NHL 80-81 Hartford NHL When I look at Carolina's history in the game, the Franchise starts in Indianapolis in 79-80, then moves to Hartford in 80-81 and Carolina in 97-98? I'm pretty sure Hartford was there when I actually simmed the 79-80 season. I'm sure I would have noticed Indy at some point when simming or looking at standings, scoring leaders etc. So it could be a glitch. in just Hartford's history. On a side not how does the WHA dispersal work anyways? Messier and Gretzky don't always end up with the Oilers. |

That's very strange, I'd like to have a look at the save if you can upload it (instructions here).
The WHA dispersal is semi-random - players on Birmingham/Cincinnati/Indianapolis who have NHL rights already assigned will belong to that NHL team. If they don't (as in the case of undrafted guys like Messier and Gretzky), they'll tend to go either to where to the ex-WHA team(s) that tended to wind up with most/the best of their teammates (e.g. Cincinnati to Quebec, Indianapolis to Edmonton), but there's also a chance they'll wind up getting their rights randomly assigned to one of Winnipeg/Quebec/Hartford/Edmonton. |

I've loaded it and it's called Gretzky History.
However I now recall that I did experiment with renaming teams in a Historical mode game. It was probably this one and that's probably what happened here. I remember renaming a team or two and then noticing the next season it or they reverted to the original franchise so I gave up after that. So if there's a quick way to check for that I would start there |

Yep, that's what it is. Hartford has been renamed to Indianapolis for that one season. Gretzky played in the WHA with Cincinnati in this game, and when they folded during the merger his rights wound up with Indianapolis/Hartford - I think Hartford's one of the preferred destinations for ex-Cincinnati players with no NHL rights, if I remember right.
