How I alter the QuickStart

I got inspired by a pm from Andy, that I will share with you the steps I take to pare down the QuickStart to make it more manageable...give us something else to read while we wait for release. Then in early April I will make it available for anyone who wants it.
Why I do it. The qs really is an amazing amount of work by the team, but I found it too consuming with 7 levels of minors and all the 1 star players soon to be forgotten, all the retirees and extra coaches, as well as some of the rating structure for batters. So around April 1 I begin the process...
Which follows

1 remove retired players from hall of fame...found I have to do this step before deleting
2 delete all retired players. And there are a lot. Frees space in the db.
3 I save a template...so in case I make further mistakes I don’t have to do this again, learned the hard way.
4 start to delete minor leagues. The trick here is to move all the players to higher levels before the delete. I drop down to 4 minors but sometimes even to 3. Can either set levels you keep at 50 and go to each team and click “ set up minors” , or manually mass select players off the soon to be deleted teams and mass move them so teams are empty. Well mostly empty, players on the dl don’t move, so I check for 4 star players and manually move them. Then delete those leagues...
5 now we have a mass of junk players in the free agent pool. So I mass select, I un select any mlb quality guys still available so they can still be there, and delete the rest. You have just got rid of maybe 2000 players.
6 ah now the available coaches are even more clogged. We have to mass delete all of them. Unfortunately there is no way to unselect from this, so they all go. I then create a few fictional coaches of each type to have available. Here is where you rename them for any real life guys you want from the delete.
7 basics are done. I save the template again.
8 now comes a bit of work. I have found that the way players are rated is a bit off, by that I mean mlb players get rated based on what their stats will be this year, a guy projected to hit 270 with 17 home runs, is rated 270 with 17 home runs. On the surface this makes sense. But I have found the minor league guys, and especially new game generated draft picks are rated way higher than what we see if current players. Especially batters. I find in 2 or 3 years most of the current players are bench players or not wanted at all. So I make a small upgrade. Pitchers tend to work fine in this system, but not batters. So for all starting 9 batters per team I add 5% to their power and overall contact. The increase is minimal. A 140 contact 120 power becomes 147 contact 126 power. A160 power becomes 168 ect. It has little impact on the year stats due to how the gam3 engine generates it because I do this for the whole ml. But it keeps current players in the lineup an extra year or two over the fictional generated guys. I don’t touch the potential except in cases , usually players over 25 where their potential and actual are the same. Then I bump potential the same amount. Otherwise say a 120 100 actual. And 140 130 potential player, becomes 126 105 actual, and sill 140 130 pot3ntial.

Then save it and play. Around June I adjust some ratings based on how guys are doing in the season, and by August am ready for a full on play through.

Disclaimer. This thread was not done to bash ootp, 5e designers, or roster makers in any way. They all do incredible work to put this together for all of us. I love the qs just it gets a bit big for me, so I learned to pare it down, speeds up the game, and I lose nothing along the way. Also with the altering of batting ratings I find current players career turn out a bit more exacting for me.
That’s the key for me. As wolf says it’s your game, play it your way. That is why ootp is in a class by itself. Marcus has designed a game we can alter to be what we want.
So while we wait I shared my process for others who may be interestied. Sometime early April my revision is ready for anyone who wants a peek.
Looking forward to the week of the 19th and see just how it all looks
I

As I said I got the idea from you a few years back. I did figure out one thing on my own that made things easier. For the leagues I plan on deleting I go to their settings and change the max age to 15. I then run computer manager on all teams and it will follow my new rule so you won't have any players on those teams anymore.

The only problem with that the good prospects on those teams in the leagues you are deleting...they would just get dumped in the free agent pool instead of moving up within the organization with a team that will stay with...so you have to move those players manually first before running computer manager. But your way certainly works too.

I didn't look at it too closely afterwards, but I had assumed that it just moved everybody to a different affiliate within the organization. Eventually, though, the lesser prospects would just get released.

I guess I don't exactly delete the players and coaches as you do. Mine is basically the quick and dirty way.

I will definitely be using your quickstart since it is more comprehensive than what I do.
