Disable automatic creation of free agents.
I'm currently in my 2nd season of a 10 team custom league. I was going through the settings and I came across something called "disable automatic creation of free agents" I don't want the game to generate free agents for me, I only want free agents coming from the teams that are in the league but at the same time I don't want to have a shortage of players down the line if I choose to expand. I have "enable amateur draft" selected. I currently am currently doing a 7 round amateur draft every. Should I up the draft to 10 round or more if i'm going to turn automatic creation of free agents off to make sure enough new young talent is coming in? I had it on for the first season but now that I know it exists i'd like to keep it off. Like I said I don't want to have a shortage of players so i'm not 100 percent sure how to proceed.

Don't think it would hurt to check "Disable Free Agents". I recall that being used mainly if you were to use feeder leagues and only desired players from those leagues (and their history) to be in the draft and not random FA's without any history.
As far as how many rounds, a search of the forum will uncover information and opinion. I also recall reading that the "rule of thumb" is 5 rounds per level of minors in your league. You do not specify that (and 7 is a curious number, but always your call). For example if you roll with AAA - AA - A - Rookie, then a 20 round draft (maybe creating players for 21, 22) would be acceptable. Should you expand, then the number of teams picking each round will obviously increase, but the "5 per" is still viable. Search for more! |

How many levels of minors do you have? If you have beyond AAA i would up the rds in the draft. Eventually you'll get to the point that when September call ups happen, you wont have enough players on the A & AA rosters after the ML takes players from AAA and AAA takes from AA. and AA takes from A.

Right now all I have is the major league and AAA. So do you guys think 10 rounds would be plenty if I have disable automatic creation of free agents off?

The disable auto creation of free agents is only there if you have the amateur draft turned off and you also dont' want the league to create free agents. This is helpful for indy leagues.
If you don't want an amateur draft and you want free agents to help fill the league you would leave the box unchecked. Having the amateur draft turn on will automatically disable free agents from being created out of the blue so you don't have to worry about turning on or off the auto free agent creation button. (Someone confirm this last statement). |
