Huge fluctuations in OVR/POT based on set position

I am playing with "overall rating based on all players, not positions" turned OFF. Long story short, players' OVR/POT ratings are jacked up at LF and cratered at CF (and to a lesser extent, SS and 2B).

Intuitively, I think attempting to rate players differently based on their positions is a good idea for OOTP.

For example, a player with Adeiny Hechavarria's bat is a passable MLB player if he is a capable SS. But, in scouting parlance, his bat "won't play" at 1B/LF or even RF/3B. So it would make sense for that kind of player to rate highest at SS, and then decrease as he moved left on the defensive spectrum. However, the setting in OOTP works nothing like this.

Here is how two players (both with high enough IF and OF defensive component ratings to capably play SS or CF) saw their OVR/POT ratings change as their primary position changed:

Player A
C: 20/45
1B: 20/55
2B: 20/50
3B: 25/55
SS: 20/45
LF: 20/65
CF: 20/30
RF: 20/45

Player B:
C: 20/20
1B: 20/25
2B: 20/20
3B: 20/25
SS: 20/20
LF: 20/45
CF: 20/20
RF: 20/25

This is almost the opposite of how you'd expect it to work, right? And also apparently irrespective of positional capability, as Player A was 20/45 at both C and RF, despite having nonexistent catcher skills and above average outfield skills.

OOTP recognizes the concept of valuation based on the defensive spectrum, as positional adjustment in included in its WAR calculation. However, it seems to eschew it when it comes to OVR/POT ratings.

My guess is that leaving "overall rating based on all players, not positions" turned off simply inflates or deflates OVR/POT ratings based on how strong or weak the current crop of MLB players is at the assigned position. Either that or it just consistently inflates LF and deflates CF/SS/2B for some unknown (buggy?) reason. These are my experiences playing a 2017 season, I wonder what other people's experiences have been like across seasons.

i think you prefer "relative to position" based on what you said... so why is it off? (rhetorical, but would alleviate what you see as being 'off' since it would be normal at that point)

it's simply the defensive rating, et al., influencing it in your case... or they have a broken setting.

The defensive rating will have a different weight per position -- that's a different topic than "overall relative to position" setting. obviously you can see at 1b that their defensive ability has much lower threshold for ~average defense at 1b than SS so it's quite a bit more weight behind it for the SS overall rating.

the relative to positon setting is simply looking at who is in the league at the current moment and applying those relative differences to the ratings too. ie your best players at each position in the league will be 80/80. then, scaled from there in a proportional way. just a shift by position, no real change. but, much tougher to compare 2 different players in addition to the different weights of defense, now you have to contend with this additional subterfuge of the ratings.

pretty sure most of your answers are in teh manual too. this exceprt says as much. simple little 2-second google search

http://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com/...overall_rating

"Basis for OVR Ratings and POT Ratings
By default, OVR ratings are based exclusively on underlying actual ratings only. These are compared to the average actual ratings for all players at that position or role within the league. POT ratings are based exclusively on your player's underlying potential ratings, compared to the average underlying potential ratings for all other players at that position or role within the league."

default is "on" for that setting, if not assumed before.
