Eye Rating too powerful?

Does anyone feel like the Eye Rating is a bit too determinate of OVR rating than it should be?

I know nowadays we emphasize OBP over BA, but I still feel like Eye rating gets a little too much credit.

I've had guys who have very low contact rating (they are batting between .200 and .220) and yet still have a high rating because they have high Power and high Eye. It just doesn't seem to make sense.

hits are defintiely worth more than a walk, but the change is that walks are recognized as a bit more important than in the past.. although you wouldn't guess that from the approach players take at the play, lol.

obp has the same flaws as BA. they've just lumped walks in there, lol.

high overall is correlated but does not guarantee a good performer (speaking of probability of performing well, not "looks good"). high overall just looks good. to some extent that is true of Contact, but not as drastically

trust your instinct.. my first concern is being a proficient hitter (contact, not eye) if i am going to spend top-dollar on a player. for the cheaper guys, sometimes that .225-.250BA / ~greater than league average obp guy is just fine at the bottom of the order, or even leadoff, if really high obp... or maybe just in a bind and better thant he .220/.250/slightly higher slugging guy -- depends on need a bit.

make sure contact rating isn't out-of-whack in a debilitating way... contact is made up of babip rating, avoid k's and a slightly lesser extent, power.

so, even the same Contact rating can have different results. the same reason people in the forums say avoid using overall is the same reason i say you should consider the 3 ratings that make up contact, not Contact itself. a really low avoid k or babip is a killer. contact can mask that... you could see a ~60's/80 contact and he's actually sub-average babip to the extent he's ~league average or less BA... with above average contact rating, lol.

contact is importnat but if you don't make sure the unseen portion isn't very poorly rating, you aren't doing your due dilligence, per se.

They are obviously more valuable than a 0.250/0.320 type which is what MLB average is.

I dont think EYE is overrated at all. EYE is not only the ability to take a walk but also the ability to know what pitches to swing at. It comes into effect on every pitch. Poor swing selection is as damning to a hitter as the inability to make good contact. In fact, the 2 are intrinsically related.
