Editing the Almanac
Since OOTP5's release, I've been enthralled with everything new and improved about the game, so I haven't had the time to sit down and think about some things until now. I've imported a league I'm rather fond of from v.4, and I didn't think I wouldn't mind the lack of reports (past MVP's, World Series winners, etc.) in the new almanac, but I do miss them being readily available. I know the almanac generates HTML files, so I know that they are editable.
I like the game-generated pages quite a bit, so I was hoping to edit the almanac's HTML files in order to add the missing information from past seasons manually. Through Internet Explorer, I have the ability to open a report and edit it with Microsoft Word. However, my problem with this is that the game's formatting changes in the Word translation. I was able to add rows & information rather easily, however the heading, and the info the game has already produced turn out to be tremendously out of format (wrong font, won't stay centered, info wraps after one word, etc.) So my question is, is there an easier way of editing HTML files? I've fumbled through Word for an hour now and gotten some things to line up, but I've also only inputted a couple of years of information in that time, too. Entering the rest & then fooling with the formatting for every entry could take me weeks, lol. So does anyone know if there's another editor, or just something I'm missing from Word that makes this process easier? Also, does anyone know that once the new .html page is saved, if the game will continue to append to that particular file? Any assistance here will be greatly appreciated. |

I completely agree so far Henry, lol - I know "some" about HTML, but I figured Word would retain the right information in the transfer. It just doesn't, lol. I'd prefer to add the information into the almanac's HTML files visually, rather than through a text HTML editor. I don't want to change backgrounds/table styles or anything, I'm just wanting to add new rows with the same style text as generated by the game, without losing the formatting along the way. This should be easy, lol.....

Henry's right, for any type of regular HTML editing you don't want to be using Word as the editor. It puts a lot of proprietary B.S. in the HTML file that causes problems down the road.
FrontPage is OK. Most versions of MS Office come with some version of FrontPage. DreamWeaver is better. Hand-editing HTML is best, but only if you have the inclination to learn to code (I don't). The first two require $$ and the third requires time & patience. So, for quick 'n dirty editing, the best way to go is some sort of readily-available, FREE, alternative. I think Win98 (and possibly WinME) come with some sort of FrontPage 'lite' program, found under Programs | Accessories. Not 100% sure on that one. Of course if you have MS Office installed look around for FrontPage. As for freeware programs, try searching Google for some sort of freeware or shareware HTML editor. The key word here is "WYSIWYG". what-you-see-is-what-you-get. This allows for visual editing of the HTML files without having to learn what the raw code means. I found several programs that will edit the raw HTML code just fine, but WYSIWYG programs are a little more scarce. See what you can turn up. If you resort to editing the HTML code (non-WYSIWYG), I can recommend UltraEdit (www.ultraedit.com). Great all-purpose text editor that will open up an HTML file and let you edit it manually as opposed to working with a layout view, as in Word or FrontPage. Anyways, to make a long story short (too late), if you're looking to edit the HTML and just wanting to add new rows with the same style text as generated by the game, maybe try opening the HTML file with NotePad. Launch NotePad, find the .HTML file and open it. Look for the section you're wanting to duplicate, copy & paste to a new area, edit the new text a little bit, & you're done. Save. Bam. Hope this helps, and good luck! |
