opt out question

If a player chooses not to opt out, will there be a notification email?

i believe so. Can't recall exactly if it's an email or something to the GM/Manager. i think it was around the time of arbitration. Had it happen to one of my stars pitchers in my last season, but i can't recall exact circumstances. But i knew before FA filings i had to find a replacement.

in my online league, 1 player had a Vesting Option (which was met) and an opt out. After the Vesting was met, i never received a decision about the opt out (other teams had players opt out).

could there be an oversight?

while im happy that he stays, i just want to make sure that everything worked as it was supposed to.

If it is the players decision, regardless of the decision, it doesn't matter logically. Since you have no control getting or not getting an email is meaningless. I understand that it matters socially, I'd like to know as well but if the player is still on your team after the date prescribed, your roster will reflect it as well as your budget.

Yes. You will receive a message stating the player has opted to stay with your team.
Just had it happen.

It should happen on the first day of the offseason, right after the WS. That is when team option decisions are due. I would imagine the same timeframe applies.

I dont care about the social aspect.
I am worried that he might not actually get to choose, that the system is flawed.
On Nov 4th, all Options are trigged (at the same time?). If both are triggered at the same time, then the optout couldnt trigger. The last year of the contract is a vest option that hasnt triggered yet, so there is no decision to make. And then bamm, Vesting option fullfilled, 1 year is now guarantueed.

But isn't the idea behind the vesting option that it's automatically triggered? And logically, if the player really cared about the ability to opt-out above everything else, he wouldn't have agreed to a vesting option that could potentially take that choice away from him.

i agree that it should be auto triggered, but apparently it doesnt and the opt out then gets skipped

i posted it in bugreport, see answer from Matt

It's a bug in AI logic. Both options in the same year make no sense when negotiating a contract. Matt should fix the AI so it can't happen. See my post in the other thread.

Keep in mind an opt out is also an opt in, a very powerful card for a player. Opt out/in clauses are very rare. As of 2014 only 7 of 52 $100M+ contracts have Opt out/in clauses. None AFAIK including lower value contracts have vesting options that would result in free agency. MadBum has club options that can vest with a higher salary via innings pitched or winning awards. Not the same thing and he has no opt out/in.

The only contract with both that I can find is Elvis Andrus but they are not in the same year so it's not analogous.

From a team perspective it makes no sense to accept multiple clauses one of which removes the protection from player injury established by a vesting clause. I'd fire any lawyer that would give away my vesting clause protection by allowing an injured player who didn't meet the vesting requirement a free shot at continuing the contract if injured. It contradicts the entire logic of vesting clauses. It defies logic that a team would want to give a player with injury concerns an opt out/in in the first place. This is poor AI and real life logic.

From a player perspective it makes no sense to accept competing clauses unless one overrules the other. The player opt/in out is far more powerful, so any agent worth his salt would insist that it overrule making the other clause moot. A player with an injury history that calls for a vesting clause is not going to have enough leverage in the FA market to get an opt out/in. This is poor AI and real life logic.

Unless we can show several real life contracts that have these options in the same year, I'd submit that the contract module be corrected so that it can't happen.

if you don't get an email you can go to the player's profile, and any option choice should be available in the Available Actions dropdown menu.

i know the arbitration screen is useful, but the Salaries report in team home will give all the info you need to make sure you don't miss anything. if they change vesting (or whatever is off) options at a later date that's great too, but until then you'll need a plan b.
