Cy Young Pitcher Crashing in Playoffs in Back to Back Seasons

I have a Cy Young winning pitcher in my fictional league who has been lights out in his age 34 and 35 regular seasons. Each post season he gets shelled. Is this a fluke or something that is part of the engine? He seems to be an outlier on my staff in this regard. I monitor rest closely to ensure he is starting at 100%.

trust the ratings, unless he is throing 3 different fastballs and nothing else. look over scouting reports... if you see a stead decline of more than 1 year... he's likely falling apart.

if stats only and he has 2 cy youngs, trust his history. stats only still shows velocity right? use that to gauge decline in skills if after age 30... really anytime after age 28 and above or whenever development ends.

it's definitely a random result unless he has regressed talent-wise. at 34-35 that can possibly happen in a short period of time... since he was lights out again, i'd bet the first year was definitely just bad luck... the 2nd year it's possible he degraded during the season.

The playoffs, regardless of talent level, are basically always a crapshoot anyway. They're designed for luck almost specifically. Any team can catch fire and start hitting really well or pitching beyond their level at any time.

My point is it's not far fetched for a great pitcher to struggle in high leverage and playoff situations. However, some do and some don't. It's not the games error however.

In a previous version I had a league where I managed the most dominant pitcher of all time in that league's history, he won something like 5 Cy Youngs and never really had a bad season. But I think he won two post-season games in five seasons of post-season appearances. Drove me crazy. But that's baseball.

The playoffs are such a ridiculous #SSS that it could just be flukey

I certainly do not buy Kershaw reverts to Oliver Perez come playoff time.

And in the opposite direction, a scrub like Don Larson can throw a perfect game in the World Series.

So you never know with these things....

Bad luck, small sample size.

Ask the 2001 Mariners.

that's due to a small sample size. it's not far-fetched. it should be expected to happen, even if less probable with a really good pitcher.

we are saying the same things, but unless i am mistaken you think we are saying something different?

he does have to consider age at 35 though. sometimes it can happen in a matter of a couple months with a pitcher (e.g. ace to average or worse etc).

My 4 time Cy Young winner is horrible in the playoffs. Glad I'm not the only one cringing when he starts.

David Price hasn't exactly been automatic either. The Braves had a "pretty good" rotation and they only got 1 championship despite 13 Div. crowns. roll of da dice come playoff time.

I have definitely played sports videogames with a "clutch/choker" kind of setting... but I've never felt that way about OOTP in any version. Without even getting into whether or not "clutch" is a thing in actual baseball
