Play With Friends Online

So I have no idea where to post this on the forum, please move it wherever you need to

I love playing OOTP and have for years (since version 8 maybe?)

And recently I've talked some friends into trying to the game out, and we would like to play a fictional league together, but don't want to play with other people around the internet, just ourselves so we can move at our own pace.

How would you recommend we do that? It would be like 3 or 4 guys (and CPU running the other teams). Any suggestions?

same way you would run any online league, just with AI GM's for most of the teams. There are lots of online leagues that will run with an AI controlled team if necessary. League runs the same, either way. I would imagine there is a "how to run an online league" section in the manual.

The AI makes decisions on a daily basis in game. If you are going to sim longer than the default waiver, dfa and DL lengths you will want to adjust them or the AI will have an advantage. They will have a slight advantage in FA because they will respond to negotiations immediately, players have to wait until they DL the sim file.

Okay, so I set up the online league, and I've been following the prompts in that manual, but I have an additional question.

I'm trying this out with just one friend first.

We are doing a modern, 2016 league where we each have one team.

I assume there is no way to do 'real-time' simulation where every prompt we each hit affects the other immediately?

So then our idea is for me to save the file, upload it, and then email it to him as a zip folder. He then downloads the folder in his saved games folder and should be able to open it. But he can't as it sits. He is able to see all the saved stuff like logos, etc. But he can't actually get the game to open under 'load game' in the OOTP home screen.

Any help?

Our thought was I would run it as a commish, do my changes, send him the file, he does his changes and sends it back. Then sim a week a day, then I do my changes, then he does his changes from my saved folder, and sends it back, etc.

Is that the best way to do this?

A friend of mine and I tried this a few years ago. We ran into file size issues using email. Might be best and probably easier to set up the game to handle the uploading and downloading. I believe we used AllSimBaseball.com. If you go this route everyone does everything in game. It had a very low monthly fee (I want to say it was less than $10) and actually gave you your own website so your friends could actually view the news and their results online if away from the game. It's much easier this way, at least it was in our opinion.

Both of us like to rebuild teams. So in the early going we flipped a coin...he won. So he was able to make three trades before I then had the chance to make the same number of deals and this would continue until we were ready for opening day. Once the season began we just proceeded on. If one of us wanted to make a trade we just slowed down and let it happen. We let the game sort out free agent signings. As commish you will have to be on your honor as you will be able to see any pending offers he should make but that's easy enough. We had a fun time with it but it didn't last long for reasons unrelated to the game. Good luck and have fun. I hope that you get a few of your friends involved.

I really appreciate it! I went ahead and set up an initial site, $7. Says 24 hours to create the site, so we'll see how long it takes them.

I appreciate the response!

While I'm at it.

Any self imposed rules you or any other friends would apply to keep things balanced?

We'll be running an international draft so it's not so easy to over spend savings on international free agents.

I'm thinking limitations on trades and free agent signings and accepting trades via approval from the other person. I.e. This trade doesn't rip off the other team.

Anything anyone ever does?

We kept it really friendly so we didn't really need any house rules. We just tried to keep things even. The AI team had to accept any proposed trade. We never used force trade so there was never any of one of us trying to convince the other that it was a good deal. The AI had to accept it and we honored that. We each took an NL and AL team. Neither of us ever played the game in a manner which took advantage of the game so it wasn't really a concern for us as we went forward. Good luck! Do what you both feel is best.
