Free agency help

Can you tell me why a player who was drafted the previous year would be a free agent the next year?

Example, I am playing a historical league - and I began in 1969. The draft for 1969 was held 12/15/1969 and Brent Strom was drafted in the
1st round - 14th overall pick, the very next season, he was signed to a one-year contract by a different team. Same thing happened to Rick Reuschel - he was drafted 1st round, number 8 overall by the Oakland Athletics, a year later he signs a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Neither of these players were released or placed on waivers. Why would they be free agents?
