Good beginners rebuilding advice follow up / Part 2

Because life is so busy right now, I am taking the entire 2016 season off from actually being a GM and involving myself in the game. I am watching the season unfold by catching the BNN news, looking at standings, stats, transactions and everything else. Sometimes, I will even watch a game. But, I have this question as a kind of follow up to my "rebuilding" advice question....

As I am sitting and observing the 2016 season and want to be a GM prolly around November after the World Series. What should I be watching, paying close attention to, making notes of, etc., to be a GM in the 2017 season? I have made a Shortlist of some talented International players (in case I might want to trade for one or acquire if one might be waived) and I am watching how some of the big free agent signings are working out. I dont know which team I want to take and rebuild yet, but I was wondering what advice you all could give me as I observe what's happening. What is important now as I get ready for a future team?
