The Most Expensive Free Agent Ever??
Jason Heyward just finished his second straight MVP season for the Cubs, and decided to use his Opt Out clause after year 2, making him a free agent. His extension demands were around $41 million per year over 8 years, I decided to slap him with a qualifying offer and let him walk. I go to see his demands and offer him the contract he desired previously. He declines. His renewed demands show up as 68,000,000 dollars a year.
![]() ![]() ![]() Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? I'm puzzled as to how and why these players have their demands so high for so long? |

I gave Bryce Harper a 10-year, $412 million deal after the 2017 season. The total value could've been worth an estimated $440M
His contract went like this: $800,000 bonus for an ASG selection $1,000,000 if he won an MVP or had 600 PA's a season 2018-2019: $28,000,000 2020-2021: $35,000,000 2022-2023: $41,000,000 2024-2025: $45,000,000 2026: $54,000,000 2027: $60,000,000 |

He will most likely sign a 1 year deal with a new team every season unless he gets an extension.
Free agency is flawed for superstars like this. The exact reason I haven't played the game in days. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk |

I have seen others state that this is 'broken' and I have no idea the frequency or mechanics behind what is happening - but in my small sample size of three saves I've already see an example when Xander Bogaerts reached free agency and when the Red Sox wouldn't meet his extension demands the White Sox signed him to a 7 year 38M/yr contract. So it isn't an absolute, which might just mean that if there is a problem it will be even harder to diagnose and address I guess. For me though I haven't seen the problem personally.

yeah, has to be league configuration or bad luck... or good luck that some haven't seen it etc etc. i've started to play some seasons with my '17 league, as opposed to other activities. i'll try to pay attention to FA contract lengths.
at any moment, there is maybe 1, possibly 2, 30M/year contracts in my league's financial environment. --review cash supply... is there too much available for one or relatively few team(s)? if one team can afford a 50M contract and all the others cannot, the player will still demand 50+ M. significant financial disparity in your league will cause huge initial demands from all the top players, which will hinder their rate of signing, which then causes smaller/shorter contracts due to small budgets when the demands drop to a reasonable level. --have you changed the default "cash on hand" cap? this is a bad idea based on your comments above about what you expect of contracts. keep it around ~10M. other settings should be painfully obvious as the cause, if you changed them. |
