Help me decide
Running a random debut league. 1 Subleague, 18 teams, 3 6 team divisions. Using a 132 game schedule, each team plays in division teams 12 times, out of division teams 6 times. Using 1978 as my base year.
What playoff format would you use. 1. No wildcard system. Team with best record would get a first round bye while the other 2 division winners play a best of 5 series. Probably my least favorite choice. Worried about team with bye getting cold while they wait. Plus, I worry that simply having the best record doesn't always mean best team. 2. One wildcard setup. 3 division winners and one wildcard. 3. Two wildcard setup with wildcards meeting in a 1 game playoff to determine which team advances. 4 Two wildcard setup with wildcards meeting in a best of 3 series to determine which team moves on. Thinking I would give the team with the best record home field advantage for all 3 games. |

Nice idea, should make an interesting league.
I'd vote #2 - one wildcard, no play-in game. |

Option 5. Use custome playoffs and take the 4 best teams record wise. If that means a division winner doesn't get in, oh well play better!
However, to answer your question, option 3. I like to reward best record. Good luck.
