First Time Playing OOTP 17 Tomorrow
I will be playing OOTP for the first time tomorrow when 17 comes out. What do you recommend starting out with?
I know when I play Football Manager I usually start with a game managing Chelsea, because they have a big budget and I understand the EPL very well. I do this just to get my bearings and to see the new stuff in the game. I'm a big Orioles fan and also play a lot of APBA. I recently replayed the 1997 Orioles season and was thinking of staring there since I know all the players already. Or should I start with a 7 game historical series to understand how a single game works? I'm open to any ideas. |

Recommend - keeping this page handy and use the forums.
It depends on what you want to do. I would recommend starting out with the established 2016 rosters, decide what team you want to manage, GM, or both and go along with the process. It may seem difficult at first, but honestly it is a very user friendly game. Enjoy - I have been ordering this game annually since 2003. |

I bought last year's version a few months ago so I could get my bearings before starting a modern franchise with the 17 release. Coincidentally enough, I chose to start with the 1997 Orioles. They're a great team to start with because they have a really great roster that you're familiar with, but they also present a clear goal - prevent the next 14 years of darkness.
As far as understanding how a single game works, I don't think that's really necessary. As long as you have a good grasp on the game of baseball itself, the in-game management is pretty simple. The learning curve is in all the GM activities. |

Just remember if starting with the 2016 rosters, when changes are made and patches put out between now and opening day you will need to start a new game to get the ratings changes, etc.

It's not really comparable cause you're talking about two different modes.
But if you start with the 1997 Orioles you're comfortable and you can learn more about the game outside of your comfort zone. So at least you're not starting from 0. That's what I'd recommend doing to learn the game and all the new features.

Since you specifically mentioned the 1997 Orioles team as one you've been interested in, I would start with that team if I was you.
Otherwise, just doing a playthrough on a 2016 season's team would be a good starting point as well. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a MLB team. You could do a Minor League, Independent League, or even a foreign league team. Maybe pick a team you don't necessarily have a rooting interest for or against, and see what you can do with it? |

I'm a big O's fan myself. I just started playing a few years ago and have been hooked. The way I do it is start with the 2016 team I fire Duquette and I see if I can put together a winner from this year on. Reason I do it this way is because I'm familiar with the team and the farm system so it's easier for me to keep track. Also I like seeing what players I draft that turn out to be good ball players. The thing is you have to do what you like. This game has something for everyone. |

How about playing those Orioles against possibly the greatest team in baseball... The 27 Yankees. Or any other team for that matter. If you're trying to get your feet wet and want a challenge, why not a game against a team you feel is the best? Jumping right into a GM or Managers shoes can be a bit steep.

OOTP 17 will be my first time playing the game also...I stumbled upon the game in steam and looked into the game and reviews and seemed like a game that I would love to play.

For anyone who's starting out fresh, I'd suggest that new exhibition mode feature thingy that Markus is implementing for this version. It sounds really cool and quick, and you could learn some of the basics before plunging deeper into the game.

I know this wasn't asked of me, but I had many false starts with OOTP starting back around OOTP5 or so. I've been permanently hooked since OOTPX. I think I just googled baseball sim and OOTP popped up. I experimented with a lot of other baseball sims, but eventually this one just won out somehow.
