Potential First Time Buyer Questions
I'm a big fan of Football Manager and have been playing it since 2007. I'm also a baseball fan and have heard over and over again how much I would love OOTP (I play a lot of the APBA baseball board game). Yesterday I listened to the "Press Row Podcast" and they had two guys who worked on OOTP basically hyping up the game. They did an excellent job, but I do have some questions that were not covered.
1) The year I most want to re-play is 1997 (Orioles). Do I have to buy that year or are all years already on the game if purchased? I know APBA you have to purchase the years you want to play. 2) If I replay the 1997 season and want to continue on into the future will rookies pop up when they should? Meaning will Adam Jones be in the 2003 MLB Draft for anyone to take or will he just automatically be on the Mariners? 3) Is the World Baseball Classic in the game? Is college baseball in the game? 4) To anyone who has played FM how does OOTP compare? Thanks in advance. |

Others will be better placed to answer than me, but a quick answer to a couple of them
1) All past years are included as part of the game. You can play from the late 1800's if you wantd. All players are in the game and this year will include around 150,000 players who ever played minor league baseball as well. 4) Every bit as good and that's coming from someone who is a huge football fan and a keen baseball fan. I'll leave the other two to those who play more historical than I do but just to say the WBC isn't in the game but may well be in the next version and that the rookies will pop up when they should. 2. After you finish 1997, if you start in a historical mode you move on to 1998. I believe with historical minors you can draft Adam Jones in the year he was drafted in the minors. In the 16, you got him the year he MLB appeared. You can set the game to assign the rookies to their right club or do a draft based on your record. Also you can force historical transactions too. 3. No WBC, I think you can coach a college team but no true college baseball.... besides who wants a metal bat! 4. Been a long time since I played FM, but I can tell you this much, if you feel something is not right on this game and talk about, the odds are Marcus and Matt will listen! And welcome to the board! |

One important thing to be aware of.....and historical players please correct me if I am wrong.....although Adam Jones will appear on schedule it does not mean he will develop the same as the real Adam Jones...he could be the same, worse or better

For the OP since he's new, recalc is used by OOTP to keep a players ratings/performance in line with his real life performance. Think of it as getting the new set up APBA player cards in the mail. Recalc comes in three flavors, 1 year, 3 year and 5 year. 1 year will get you the most accurate Jones, but 3 and or 5 will soften any huge performance ups and downs. |

Next Question
So after reading the forums here and on OS I have another question
- If I start in 1983 with real players coming into the league how easy is it to just poach the best players? Will you end up with an all-star team pretty quickly? |

It is depending on how you set your trade settings and how much the AI will value what they get in return. Plus if you play with a budget as I do and an owner, that could limit your chances of building a super All-Star team. It is not as easy as it seems. Plus you can limit what you do too.

If you try to stack a team you will find yourself in money trouble real quick. The fastest way to get fired is to cripple your team with debt.
As for one of your earlier points, the beauty of historical replay is once you go beyond the beginning of the game you are no longer re-living history, you are re-writing it. I had a game in 15 where I was managing the 1937 Cardinals and Dazzy Vance had to retire due to a torn labrum. The problems there was in 1935 he retired with the Dodgers and never tore his labrum. But he wasn't because I never traded him. What would the 1960 Yankees have won the World Series if Kansas City hadn't traded Maris? Would the HR record be broken in '61? Would John Elway have made it to the majors if he hadn't gone to the NFL? Only on way to find out. Now that the historical game actually works correctly I know I'm giving it a shot. |

You can also set up historical players without recalc, and let the OOTP development engine take hold. So you might end up with Adam Jones who hits 50 HR a year and breaks the record, or you might get an Adam Jones who never makes it to the majors. Or, as mentioned, you can use the recalc options if you want him to progress like he did in real life. Really depends how you want to play it out.
And obviously if you play historical and know players' real life stats, that gives you an edge. But they won't always play to their talents, and there's always things that can come up that can "change history" if you want to play that way. |

Thanks to everyone who has responded. I just purchased the pre-order and I'm greatly looking forward to playing this game.
For my first game I plan on starting in 1983 and replaying Cal Ripken, Jr.'s career, trying to win more than one World Series. I think I'm going to make it as easy as possible just so I learn the game mechanics. Wish I this thing came out today! |

Set the trade difficulty to very hard and the trade preference strongly to young players. You will never be able to poach the best players.

And unless you are doing a historical replay, never, ever use recalc. Always use the development engine - the randomness of which you can select - which will give you a weighted career path based on player ratings, age, and your selected randomness level.

One more question, do new stadiums pop up in the game at the appropriate time?
Meaning in 1983 will the Orioles be in Memorial Stadium? Will they move to Camden Yards in the correct year? |

They should if you have the box for "expand according to history" checked. There is a mod made by Pstrickert that you can download that has photos of all the parks.

Keep in mind that another option is to use both recalc and the OOTP development engine. I really like this method of play.
