Kimbrel for 4 prospects?!?!
News has come down that the Bostonians traded a whopping four prospects to land Padres closer, Craig Kimbrel! What's your opinion, folks?? I believe the Red Sox sold the farm (no pun intended) and a couple of cows to boot for Kimbrel! Kind of a lot to give, don'tcha think??
Thoughts? Opinions? |

Gave up a lot for him, more than I'd like for a closer, but DD needed to do something with the bullpen. Relying on Koji wasn't a good idea, and Tazawa was worked into the ground last season.
Didn't really 'sell the farm' given that they didn't give up any of the 'top' guys (like Moncada, Devers, Espinoza, Benintendi etc) and the guys they did give up are from a position of strength in Margot and Guerra. It's also difficult for me to judge this trade because I've always been a huge fan of Kimbrel

I thought it was an odd decision. Kimbrel can't save a game you're losing. It seems the Sox had bigger problems to solve than who was going to close for them next year, but I guess they can't really address them until free agency.

DD traded away prospects for a big name player.....unheard of, I can't believe it, amazing......
On the other side of the coin, as of late any closer DD touches, turns to dust, so, we will have to wait and see how Kimbel performs for Boston.

If the Sox can dump one of Sandoval Ramirez or get more out of Sandoval, they are not that far off. Price could be a very good fit and they have the money. The AL East is wide open again. Overpaying to make the playoffs and possibly win is SOP.

Prospects are not as valuable to Boston as they are to small market or mid market teams. Boston can buy players so long as they don't do Kung Fu Panda too often. And we can't blame DD for that.
Plus, for every Bryce Harper there are thousands of Wil Myers and tens of thousands of Todd Van Poppels. |

I'd be shocked if they can dump either of those players but they really don't need to with their checkbook. |

It was an overpay. but there are just certain players you overpay for. Kimbrel is one of them. As KC just showed the world what a dominant bullpen does for you. Guerra just had a breakout year, so this just might be the classic "sell high" case. Margot could be great, he could suck. The others were throw ins, and doubtful they ever amount to much. You ALWAYS trade an unknown for a known. ALWAYS. Don't even think twice about it. This move turned the Sox bullpen from last years horror show into a strength in one quick blow.

There are not thousands of guys who can post an OPS+ over 100 in the major leagues. There are roughly 1000 who have managed to do it over their career after 150 years.

What about the Padres? Every single time they come up with a good player, they trade him for prospects. No wonder they haven't had a .500 season in five years.
