September Call-Up

If you call up a player in September:

1. Are you automatically purchasing a player's contract?
2. Will it start the clock on option years?

september call ups have different rules.

i'd google it for specifics, but it should not cost an option etc to demote/promote and the like.

Yes unless the contract was previously purchased. It seems likely that some of your September callups may have been used during the season or a previous season. In which case the contract was already purchased.

It's not a clock really. I think an option is used in the reverse direction. So if a player with three options is called up in September and never sent down, no option is used. Alternatively a player may have had an option used in a previous season but if he was never on the active roster after that no options would be used.

I guess what I am really asking is this: if I purchase a player's contract in September, does that count against one of the three years before he is arbitration eligible?

This is the clock I was referring to

Yes, everyday that he spends on the active major league roster counts towards the arbitration clock.

Is it three years, or three seasons?

It's 172 days = 1 year of service.

If someone plays a lot ie in the top 21% in his first 2 seasons he is arb eligible after 2.

Edit:

Option years have nothing to do with service time and/or arbitration.
