Observations from a 25 year sim
I invested some time GM'ing a team over the past few days. It was fun watching the league evolve and how my favorite players progressed. I let the AI control scouting, training, call ups, lines, etc. I handled signings, drafting, and trades.
1. Scouting is just generally frustrating. I'll avoid the issues with individually managing assignments, since I didn't want to do it. -There are players on my scouting directors top 30 list that go completely un-scouted. The list is sent in January, I think it's fair to expect that everyone on it is an A by draft day. -There's certain leagues that have scouting holes. The Q is notorious for this. I hired 5 scouts specializing in Atlantic Canada. Come draft time, I can have both a 5a and a 5e from the Q. 5e's in general drive me crazy. They should never happen in major regions. They should probably never happen period. -OOTP gives an option to turn scouting off, I'd love the same. 2. Russian/Euro prospects- Many 5a drafted prospects could not be signed out of their leagues and eventually became UFA's. Too easy is to load up your team on these guys. 3. Roster Management- I know this is a tough area, but teams are a little too loose with their top prospects. Are previous seasons stats considered in the AI eval, like OOTP? -Jesse Puljujarvi second overall pick in 2016. He evolved into a 5a first line RW and scored 30-40 for 5 straight seasons. The following season, he had 3 points in 4 games. He was sent down to the AHL and then released. He signed with another team and scored 50 the following season. -Julius Honka He became an incredible 5a offensive D. He bounced between Dallas and the AHL for 4 seasons, then became a FA. I singed him. After 2 huge offensive seasons (he was a 5a) and a playoff MVP, I signed him to a 5 year extension. The AI played him in 12 games the following season (no injuries). The following season, the AI still wouldn't put him in the lineup, so I traded him. He returned to his All-Star production immediately. |
