Just a note about a new fictional league I started to help me ignore the fact that my apartment is not air-conditioned and five fans just aren't getting the job done...
Set up a 30-team league with local cities and towns, ran the league for 25 years to establish benchmarks, then took over a rather bad team at the end of a season. Pitching was bad, so I hit the free agent market early and tried to get good for value rather than superb for more money than the owner has. This was a success and a few trades thrown in got the team back to .500 in the preseason rankings, 18-2 in spring training!
Now comes opening day, home game against the one team to beat in the division. Our four-star #1 starter takes the mound and pulls an Eddie Cicotte, hitting the first batter. Next batter grounds into a double play, then the starter hits a second guy.
Then a third!
Then a fourth...BRAWL!
Dock Ellis once threw at each Red he faced until being taken out. I bet the GIDP was a protection swing while getting out of the way...
Nine game suspension for both pitcher and batter. Starter #6 takes over and gets the next guy but we lose. Now leading the division by a few games in mid-August. Can't beat this game!
