What sort of a GM are you

Are you one that likes to watch the games and oversee how the manager does and control everything from demotions/promotions of minor leaguers to making that vital trade that gets you that one player to take ur team to the next level or one that to just sim games and look at the trade options or are you just a simple GM that just sims all the games and leaves the trades to your assistant GM and just takes control of the finances and hiring firing of staff. I'm a simple GM only because I'm not used to all the rules of the MLB just yet eventually I'd like to control everything but not until I'm familiar with the rules

I'm definitely on the micro-manage side of things

- I make all the signings/releases/trades/extensions
- I set the lineups, rotations, depth charts, & bullpen roles for the entire system (though I do tend to only roll with 20-25 players max on each MiLB affiliate)
- I hire all the coaches & managers in my system
- I set the strategy for my team (and import it for all my MiLB teams with the exception being more likely to use pinch hitters & runners and quicker hooks)
- Oddly enough, I prefer just hitting quickplay over managing the game, so I could be more hands on, but I do quickplay every game (even ST games) so I'm just simming 1 day at a time
- Every 2-3 days, I check the waiver wire & trade block to see if any new names have been added

- On the macro-level, I submit an All-Star ballot & manually select award winners & HOF inductees

Wow. This points to how lazy I have become.
"I make all the signings/releases/trades/extensions" - Yes that is true of me.
"I set the lineups, rotations, depth charts, & bullpen roles for the entire system" - Life is too short! Parent club only.
"I hire all the coaches & managers in my system" - Again, parent club only. My assistant GM handles the lower levels adequately enough since I have no minor league strategy of stressing contact or power pitching. Just good coaches who work well with youngsters (I should check on that, though, to see if AGM is following the second criterion).
"I set the strategy for my team" - Well, yes and no. I do tend to play out my games, so this is not a factor normally. When I get bored or frustrated, I will sim games and let the bench coach manage, so I do pay attention to his strategy.
"I prefer just hitting quickplay over managing the game" - Ha! Got you beat there, buddy.
"Every 2-3 days, I check the waiver wire & trade block to see if any new names have been added" - But here is your comeback. If I remember to check these once a season, I am lucky. Usually I go looking only if I suddenly need somebody and of course usually nobody is available.

I sim one day at a time, doing the following:
  • all promotions/demotions/DL assignments at all levels
  • set daily lineups at the MLB level
  • read all box scores for my teams at all levels each day
  • track prospects and potential prospects on a daily basis
  • check the waiver wire, trading block and transactions list daily
  • make all draft picks
  • handle all free agent signings
It takes me a while to get through a season, especially with grad school classes always chewing up some time. But I can usually play 3-6 games after morning while I eat breakfast, so it takes about 2-3 months for a full season.

Haha, I'm not quite as micro-managy as the post made me sound. I hire all coaches to 5 year deals so unless a coach retires, it's just 2 rounds of hiring per decade

And the minor league rotations/lineups/etc aren't bad. Yeh, it takes a good 15-20 minutes at the start of the season, but it's not like I'm sitting there debating between who should bat 3rd or 4th, it's just quick & easy and I only make adjustments for injuries if the injured player in question will be out at least 2 weeks (and like I said, I rarely have more than 25 players on a minor league team, so sometimes even if I want to edit my lineup or rotation for injury, there's nobody there to take their place)

I also make all draft picks (even in an inaugural draft ) and read my MLB team's box score for each game

Rarely, if ever, read box scores for any of my farm teams, but I try to check my farm teams' standings 2-3 times a season if I can remember

On promotion/demotion, I control them as well and typically check for guys to promote/demote every 2 weeks or so
