In madden I draft the worst players just for a challenge

I play Madden 2008 (last year the game came out on PC) and I always draft the worst players when I do an inaugural draft because lets face it after 7 years I can pretty much go undefeated every season.

My brother challenged me to try it in OOTP and let me tell you it doesn't work. Through 35 games I'm 2-33. average ERA is 9.36 and BA is .167.

I'm not even going to play out the season because even with cannot be fired on and getting the first pick in the draft for umpteen years it will take me 10+ years to get to just .500.

If you think that's frustrating wait until you assemble a treasure trove of all-stars and then get swept in the divisional series by a far inferior team. The intricacies of the game are fantastic. The little things like ignoring a players defensive ability or desire to win or your managers controlling personality can go unnoticed all year and then it hurts when it counts the most and it makes you feel like you have to assemble the perfect combination. And then that falls apart in a year or two as your star peaks or you reach your budgetary threshold as youngsters hit arbitration. Love this damn game.

Better yet, win your division by a boatload, then lose Game 7 of a tied World Series by a walkoff 2-run homer!

I once tried a team of some of the lesser known White Sox & Cubs players over the last 30 yrs and I lost 112 games. Some of the players I had as starters were:
Craig Grebeck
Vance Law
Doug Dascenzo
Luis Salazar
Bobby Hill
Mike Huff
Shawn Abner
Michael Jordan
Larry Thomas
Felix Diaz
Shawn Hillegas
Jim Bullinger
Kelly Wunsch
Lorenzo Barcelo etc

How deep are you going with the talent pool? Because in Madden you can have a team full of crap players, but in OOTP assuming you're using the minors, you can get some guys who would never deserve to be on even a AA roster.

Full minors plus the entire starting FA pool.

Even my scrap heap teenager teams can get to 21 wins most of the time. The Cleveland Spiders' futility record is safe.

I've gotten a tremendous challenge from OOTP by turning off trading and setting up a system where players are drafted like football, out of college, 22-23, and nearly fully developed. I can be competitive every year, usually wining my division, and even a fair number of championships, but there has never been a season where it just feels like my team "should" dominate. It's a piece of work trying to fit enough starting pitchers to make it through a season in a certain budget, knowing you can't just trade surplus parts for one if you have a need midseason (and there won't be any on the FA market either). If you are competitive every year, your draft picks will be the best of what's left which is frequently not star potential, so you can pay a premium for a few star pieces and have to make whatever else you can get work.

One thing is for sure, OOTP offers an infinite number of ways to get a challenge if one so desires.

There are worse teams than one full of minor league scrubs making no money

C Russell Martin (32, 5 yrs/$82M)
1B Albert Pujols (35, 7 yrs/$189M)
2B Robinson Cano (32, 7 yrs /$168M then a $2M buyout)
3B Alex Rodriguez (39, 3 yrs/$61M)
SS Elvis Andrus (26, 8 yrs/$118M)
LF Carl Crawford (33, 3 yrs/$62.25)
CF Jacoby Ellsbury (31, 6 yrs/$126.86M)
RF Shin-Soo Choo (32, 6 yrs/$116M)

SP Max Scherzer (30, 7 yrs/$210M)
SP Justin Verlander (32, 5 yrs/$140M)
SP Homer Bailey (28, 5 yrs/$91M)
SP Matt Cain (30, 3 yrs/$60M then a $7.5M buyout)
SP James Shields (33, 4 yrs/$73M)

$232.6M payroll & didn't even give you any overpaid guys on the bench, at DH or in the pen. Plus, the salaries for those 13 guys jump to well over $250M the next season
