Player Comparison interpretation?

When viewing the player comparison screen how should the list of "comparable players" in the lower half of the player screen (whether career or by age) be interpreted?

In the case from the OOTP manual at the link is it fair to view this as the closer the number is to 1000 (highest) the more comparable that player is to those listed?

And therefore, in the case of the player on the left in the image from the manual (at the link), because the next comparable starts at 905 that player is far superior to his peers?

The text for this says it's simply a comparison, but doesn't really explain how to read the info.

I believe you are correct. I just went into a long history league that I am involved with to see if the actual #s in the window mean something and they don't from a historical statistical sense thus, the higher the # most likely the most comparable the player whereby 1000 is the closest.
