Storyline: News Comes Out After a Trade

I'd like to see some "sour grapes" stories after you trade a star player. Like Kinsler last year saying he hopes the Rangers never win a game again, or this recent story about Josh Donaldson and his GM ( Scott Miller's Starting 9: With Nelson Cruz, Mariners Can Win Now?and Later | Bleacher Report #4 ). The storyline would be triggered a few days after you make the trade. Perhaps a player's greed or lack of leadership ability or wanting to play for a winner and you trade him to a salad team would increase the likelihood of it happening.

People are overlooked for a variety of biased reasons and perceived flaws. Age, appearance, personality. Bill James and mathematics cut straight through that. Billy, of the 20,000 notable players for us to consider, I believe that there is a championship team of twenty-five people that we can afford, because everyone else in baseball undervalues them."

More storylines generally would be cool. And fixing the existing ones so the minimum year limits actually work.

storylines in general are the greatest untapped reservoir this game has I think as far as immersion goes.

Think of how many stories there are in the mlb a week (the fact they need their own network) compared to what we see in the game.

Markus may have something different to say, but if we tried to mimic the enormous number of stories each week in a typical MLB season, I think we'd overwhelm most people. As it is, we get complaints about the volume of messages in the game.

I think this is the kind of thing that should be seen as an abstraction in the game: Sure, there are tons of stories happening every week in your game world, but these are the few we've chosen to show you.

We're curating them -- Ack, shoot me now for using that word.

This comes back to an idea I had a bit ago of allowing an option similar to the "Stats detail level" for the amount of storylines. So you have a setting called "Storyline detail", and on the highest setting you get a "realistic" number of stories (some of which are essentially fluff that do nothing).

News stories are not messages. They occur on the front page and in your newspaper. You don't get personal messages unless you have a player in the article shortlisted or it involves your team, and then you still have the option to turn off those messages. If someone complains about receiving too many messages, they likely haven't turned off the ones they don't want to receive. Quite simple to do on the manager setup page.

Sorry, but that is a lame excuse against a feature request. News stories are one of the best features of the game, sadly they don't get the attention and love they deserve.

True, you have the option to turn them off, but if we want to mimic real life, even one team has a lot of stories about its players during the season. Will the manager bench Player X because he's in a slump? Will Player Y be back from the DL soon, or has his injury gotten worse? Is Player Z bad for clubhouse morale? Will Player X2 sign the extension he was offered, or is he determined to test free agency?

Etc.

I was responding to this, which implied that maybe we should ramp up the number of stories to the point that it's similar to real life. I suppose I may have read too much into it and they were just commenting that we could increase the stories a bit, which I would agree with.

I was indeed going for where I would see more stories rather than trying to match real life where it could get to a pointless stage with them.

A few more stories might be nice, I agree it could quickly get overwhelming. For those of us who want overwhelming, maybe story numbers on some sort of option? No stories, few stories, normal amounts, lots of stories, soap opera?

That would be my idea. And maybe include a flag in the storyline file that allows us to customise which detail level some stories appear on.
