Another reason to love OOTP

I just started year six of my random debut league. I'm using a setup I've never tried before for this league and so far I really like it. It's a 1 subleague setup, 18 teams, 3 divisions. Teams play each team in their division 12 times and face out of division teams 6 times, 132 game schedule. I've never been a huge fan of the the wild card, so I decided make use of the custom playoffs feature for the very first time. The 3 division winners make the post season. The team that finishes with the best record goes directly to the World Series. Their opponent is determined by a best of 5 series between the other 2 division winners.

I know a setup like this wouldn't fly in real life. But, that's one of the things I love about OOTP. We can defy real life and do whatever our hearts desire. Cool thing is, the first 4 seasons saw the team with the best record win the World Series. In year 5 the San Diego Friars won the championship to become the first team to win without having the best record in the league.

heh...in real life, all the teams would make the playoffs. The bottom four would have a play-in game to determine seeds 15 and 16. Then in five years, they'd figure out a way to include like 6 teams from Zimbabwe to add a whole 'nother round of playoffs. More Playoffs!

Creative though. I like shorter seasons, helps get though more years before abandonment. I tend to go even lower, like 100 games.

I tried that, because I had the same thinking, but didn't like the stats when compared to all time records and what not, so I moved it up to 150 in year 2, and 162 in year 3 which is where it's still at in year 4 and will more than likely stay.

The current setup I'm using is 2 8 team divisions, with 3 teams in each division making the playoffs (the division winners get byes).

Another reason I like short seasons is they help to make me take ownership of the league. No longer am I comparing everything to the MLB. So far my high for home runs in a season is 31. Who/will someone ever hit 40? Haven't had a 20 game winner yet, but I have had a guy win 19. I'm using 5 man rotations/always start the highest rested so 31-32 ends up being the most starts a pitcher gets in a season.

David Watts, you sir are making me want to create my own fictional league (would be my first time) and stop comparing everything to real life.

Your post above just made me realize it's MY league and it doesn't have to mimic anything or follow any existing type of structure. MY creation would fit the settings and exact setup I like. I usually have the problem of always wanting to compare or match that of the majors when infact there's no need. I don't need to base it off anything but my minds creativity!

My NCAA feeder league has an interesting setup.

I got all the baseball teams in the Big 5 conferences

ACC (14 teams)
SEC (14 teams)
Big Ten (13 teams)
Pac 12 (11 teams)
Big 12 (9 teams)

Each conference is it's own division obviously, and they all play in the same subleague.
50 game season, with the following playoff setup:

Top 6 teams from the ACC, SEC, and Big Ten advance.
Top 5 teams from the Pac 12 advance
Top 4 teams from the Big 12 advance
The next best 5 teams regardless of conference also advance into a 32 team playoff.
Teams are ranked by seeding so #1 plays #32 in a march madness like setup.

Round 1 is a best of 3, all at the top seeds stadium
Round 2 and 3 are best of 5, all at the top seeds stadium
Round 4 is a best of 7, 2h, 3a, 2h
Round 5 is a best of 9, 3h, 4a, 2h

It's an awesome season, and especially playoffs to watch.

Did you check out Dream Teams Metro Leagues? I have the site bookmarked and consider it like that favorite coffee table book you've had forever. I can stop by and open to any page and it's just like reading the story for the first time again. I wish there was more time to appreciate more of the great leagues and worlds created here.

Yeah, it doesn't work well with the MLB paradigm - nobody likes comparing some guy with 400 ABs to Babe Ruth. You have to create your own universe. If you want some history in your universe, you can sim like 20 or 50 seasons before starting.

You kinda have to retrain your brain also. 25 HRs might be the new 50 HRs, 150Ks the new 200 Ks, etc...
