1967 Boston Red Sox

I have played this dynasty a few different times, with varying success. I am not sure how long I am going to keep it going, but I haven't kept a written log in a while, so here goes. Not sure on the format yet, figure I will play around with it while I am going.

I am already a couple of months into the season, and the first couple of posts will include up to date standings, stats, league leaders and team transactions.

Trade News

The Pittsburgh Pirates were busy this week, completing two separate trades that should make their fans quite happy.

First, they move C Manny Sanguillen to the Houston Astros in exchange for 4 minor leaguers, the key pieces being LF Bob Watson and SP Chris Zachary. They then turned around and traded OF Manny Mota to the Cleveland Indians for 20 year old C prospect, Ray Fosse.

I like these moves, effectively trading Sanguillen and the 29 year old Mota for 20 year old Fosse 21 year old Watson, and 23 year old Zachary, along with two other pieces.

Trade News

The Pirates continue to wheel and deal, getting younger in the process. They made two more deals this week.

First, the head scratcher. They send fan favorite and slugging 1B Willie Stargell to the New York Yankees for 4 minor leaguers. The second deal saw them trade MR Al McBean to the Mets for promising RP Tug McGraw.

In another, unrelated deal, the Chicago Cubs have acquired OF Joe Rudi from the Kansas City Athletics for backup C Gene Oliver.

Breaking Trade News

I was going to wait until I did my weekly recap, but I felt this deal deserved it's own post. This game, or at least this incarnation of it, really seems to value 2B Mike Andrews highly. I have put him out there on the trade block and gotten offers of C Johnny Bench and SP Steve Carlton. I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on those as it felt too easy. (Mind you, I have trading on hard, favor prospects).

Knowing that I had drafted Hal McRae in the first round, #5 overall this past draft however, meant that Andrews was going to be dealt sooner or later, and I found a trade, that seemed to make sense for both parties, and didn't leave me feeling like I took advantage of the Braves, as they are in rebuilding mode.

To Atlanta: 2B Mike Andrews, SP Ken Brett, RP Carroll Sembera, and C Mike Ryan
To Boston: SP Phil Niekro, C Rico Carty

I immediately fix two gaping holes in my roster, my Starting Rotation and C. Atlanta had been running out Woody Woodward and his .228/.269/.259 in 290 AB's all year and needed an upgrade. Andrews, and his .345 OBP become the Braves leadoff hitter. In the process, Atlanta also becomes younger, picking up the 23 year old Andrews, as well as the 24 year old Sembera, 25 year old Ryan and 18 year old Brett, who has middle of the rotation stuff and potential.

The overview and career stats for the main parties involved are below:

Well, this was a rough stretch for us. Over the last 10, we are 3-7, while the two teams ahead of us, Minnesota and Detroit are both 8-2 putting us 9 1/2 games out of first place. The good news is we are finally expecting Tony Conigliaro back sometime next week, after missing 2 months with an injury. Maybe we can just outscore everyone?

Trade News--

This is one I don't understand....but maybe the Yankees have a plan?

Next up are 3 games at home against the California Angels, followed by the rare, five game series against the first place Minnesota Twins.

Couple of headscratchers here. The Tigers trading Cash I don't understand, but another nice move by the Pirates, who appear to be in full rebuild mode.

Well, not exactly what I had in mind. The offense has picked up, but I just can't keep up with the Twins or Tigers. We are now 11 games out of first, and with the inconsistency of the pitching staff, it's looking extremely unlikely that this will be year 21 straight without a playoff appearance.

HR Chase--Harmon Killebrew currently sits at 43 homeruns in 121 games and is on pace to hit 57. I will keep an eye on it and see if he can make a run at Ruth.
