Most important manager stats
Would you rather pick a manager who is legendary at Hitting/Pitching/Fielding or one who is legendary at handling players? I.e., which stats are the more important ones?

For a manager, I think the "player handling attributes" are most important; the hitting/pitching/fielding stats are nice to have, but I'm relatively certain player handling is #1.

My manager I would prefer the management ratings, my coaches the coaching ratings. Both is obviously a blessing.
It matters less to me depending on how the games our played out. The leagues I play out my games, I'd probably be more inclined to go to the coaching ratings (hit/pitch/field coaching.)

You want a manager (presumably since he's "legendary" he'd only be a manager at the ML or AAA level) to get the most out of his players. You want the players to be successful every game, helping your chances of winning each game. Game performance is key to the "right now" perspective. It's more likely you'll win games if the players' chances to perform at their peak is maximized. Also, you want a manager to help push strong player development. Remember, that all players develop at the ML level, regardless if they're playing games or not. That means you could afford to have a couple of young pups on your active roster playing 1 out of every 4 games, and they still benefit from the time spent in the majors (assuming we're talking about a standard game). Player development can't be underestimated for the longevity of your organization. Better developed players attract better trade offers, and if you're lucky, are still under team control and playing in the majors. Lastly, the longevity of your players is also pretty important. Better managers (IRL, referenced as a side note here) help condition players to the rigors of playing every day, staying fit, avoiding distractions and other negative influences, and staying focused on their careers. As players age, reach their potential, and begin to fade, the effect of better aging can prolong productive careers, reducing the need to tear through your minor league system to constantly replace veterans. This allows minor league players to, in turn, spend more time in the minors developing into better players (if the minor league coaching is suitable ).The only "teaches" position I really look at when choosing a manager to hire is his "fielding" rating. This is the discipline where a PC or HC typically isn't strong in. |
