Free Agency Oddness

I tried to sign Max Scherzer today. I offered him 18 million a year for 6 years and he outright told me no, so I decided to not sign him because I didn't want to give him anymore. Then I see him get signed by another team for an increasing contract: 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20. I get that the final two years are larger than my 18, but 18 for 6 years is more than that. Why would he decline me? If it makes any difference, I am the Yankees and he signed with the Orioles. His last year was a vesting option on the Orioles contract and mine was a player option.

Second question: My owner gives me a 214 million budget but I can only spend 160 million of it. How is this my budget if I can't even use all of it?

Thanks guys

To answer your first question, he thinks he can get more (escpecially early in the offseason), so he declines your offer. When he ends up not getting what he wants, he'll go for the only offer on the table, one that may be lower than what you originally offered. If you offered what you did January 1, he might have accepted.

As a baseball fan for over 10 years, I'm ashamed at not understanding this logic. Guess I thought its a game and they'll always get what they want Thanks!

You can only spend 160 of it? do you have a salarycap? are you also accounting for coach salaries, player dev, and scouting?

Scott Boras holding clients back til others sign. Think of it like that, I am not going to take the first offer because if that is the offer you are going to give me, I can get better! They have figured out how to make Scott Boras electronic!

Im assuming this is what he's not taking into account. The budget accounts for all of those things, so your payroll will always be less (unless you have zero money allocated towards scouting/player dev)

If trading difficulty is on hard, it may be affecting your offers. I found that the players on hard trading would taker lower offers from the AI.

Idk if this is working as intended, so I posted in the Bug thread.
