Questions

I've played OOTP for years and I am interested in this game. The reviews haven't been all that great but it seems a lot of the criticism is towards the simulation aspect. I usually play OOTP for the team building aspect and would essentially do the same with this. My question is how realistic is it? Does the salary cap increase as you progress? Is the AI realistic in keeping core players or do a large number of the better players reach FA often? Seeing as there is only one console hockey game and its franchise mode takes hours to sim a season, would this be a better alternative. Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

There is a patch coming in the relative future that will, apparently, dramatically shift the game.

I would wait anywhere from a few days to a week until the patch drops, and the game's underlying mechanics are changed.

Like Stat said, you should wait for the patch as the balance isn't really good in the things that you are most interested in.

And after that read some feedback before you buy, even with a huge patch this game will still be a version 1 product and if you're a die-hard OOTP gamer this game will probably not even dance in the shadows of OOTP 14 before it hits version 3 or 4.

Not saying it's bad but don't expect too much and too deep integrations with real life simulations.

My opinion is that if you have bought this game on pre-oder ( with discount ) or you don't care about the money and you like to support-/donate to this project it's a good thing to buy it. But if you expect X for Z than you probably shouldn't buy this game because lets face it, how many days have we been able to play this game for right now. Since October I maybe have only played it for one week in total because it first wasn't playable at all you could only look around and get a understanding of the layout but not really start a season or career. After that you could start a season but everything that happened in-game was just fake or totally not fun to see happen at a simulation game where it's all about true-to-life experience. And even the next step after that ( the step I thought would come around december ) is still not available right now as we speak and we're still waiting for that major patch in March 2014.

How many hours- days or weeks can you play this game for X money if you're looking from it as a real game.

When they release this next major patch in a few days this game will probably be more fun and playable but still not very cool and we will still see a lot of stuff happen that we would've hoped where fixed around this time a year. In the next months ( at OOTP fixing-/ development-speed ) this current major patch will probably also need another patch maybe two that fixes a few things they haven't seen during 'testing' and after that it's time to start thinking of version 2.0

Long story short, if you expect a lot you probably end up not getting enough for your money playing wise in version 1 of this game.
If you have the money on you, it's fun to see the development grow from very Very bad to something becoming more and more a real game that works.

From the reviews/complaints I've read, most seem directed at historical or fictional play. I don't plan on playing the game for those modes so it doesn't affect me all that much. I play NHL 14 on console but it is painfully long to complete just one season of their GM mode and with the glitch goals, online gameplay has become a joke. Im really just looking for something that provides the team building aspect. Im debated back and forth since the release of whether or not to get it but wanted to wait for some of the patches and bugs to be ironed out. It sounds like there has been very few bugs addressed before this upcoming patch. Sorry if I misunderstood you.

I need to say that I spent many and many hours with FHM. And it's unreal to expect (I'm not saying you do that) the first version be as good and sophisticated as OOTP 14.

I haven't played NHL 14 at all but if its GM mode is even remotely close to the one in NHL 09, I think you will be much happier with FHM.

Geckon- Thank you for the input. Its your basic GM type mode. Sign guys, RFA, UFAs, offer sheets etc. Finances are your salary cap. I just want something a little more and in depth. Im not looking for this to be OOTP. Im looking for it to be more like an advanced GM mode from a console game minus the option of playing games.

If you expect a brand new first person shooter to look like the original DOOM because it is in its first version, then this is the game for you.
