Have you taken any chances on "star" pro international free-agents?

So, I had some cash to spend and was looking to add another outfielder to my active roster. This guy decided he was going to give the MLB a go...and I was intrigued.

I decided to take a big risk and gave him the money he was looking for (3 years, 42 million) beating out the likes of Texas and Oakland who were also interested in his services.

I'm hoping he pans out, but you never know. What kind of luck have you guys had?

Only two. One, Will Makepeace (see this thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3640549 ), has worked out very well. Usually a solid #2 starter, wins around 17-20 games a season, good K/BB, WHIP, ERA, etc.

The other, Juan Gonzalez (not THAT Juan Gonzalez), was a total bust, retiring in his early 20s, never getting out of the International Complex. My team's won 6 championships in 14 seasons, but can't develop an outfielder in their minor league system to save their souls!

I've had two really good buys there. I have a second baseman now that has been an all-star his first two years in the league. I also signed a closer who was 31 years old and was lights out until he turned 38.

I've also signed a few guys for the bench now and again.

I really needed a SP prior to last season and this guy looked to fit the bill. OSA and my scout agreed that he was a can't miss. I might have given him a year too many but after the first year he has been great. AS game appearance and pitched me into the playoffs by winning the wild card game. It was certainly a gamble at 17 mil a year but I had the cash and if he keeps this up for a few more years it will be a bargain.

Wow. So are you on the hook for any of his salary? probably not right?

Edit I see in his stat box that this happened two years later. Doesn't really look like his numbers were great overall.

Definitely wasn't going to hit for average (although he was improving) but he was a fantastic outfielder and was a good power bat.

Ah well. Now I can use the cash to sign a FA upgrade next offseason. Or bring in one of my talented young guys from AAA.

I signed a 23 year old Japanese starter to a 5-year, ~65M deal in one of my old dynasties and he was dominant. Won Rookie of the Year, threw 5 straight seasons with ERA's around 2.75-3.25, won 20 games once or twice, made a few All-Star teams, and struck out around a batter per inning. Wish i still had the league file to post a screenshot.

In an old dynasty i got a 27 year old cf who was 4.5 stars I got. Paid him lots of money for a five year deal.

zheng-zheo zheng if I remember correctly.

Won rookie of the year and mvp his first season. After that he spent three years struggling to play more than 100 games but played great, then traded him for prospects.

I've signed a few that turned out to be pretty successful, just pitchers though. Signed a SP who was fantastic for a short period of time, traded him away before he became a burden for me. I've also had a closer who was exceptional, but couldn't afford his demands later. I'll try to post screenshots of their stats later.

Here's the two guys I was talking about

I got good value out of both in Atlanta, though Nomura really fell off.

I haven't seen an international FA (non-amateur) worth signing since OOTP12. Maybe the talent level in my league just skews high, so the game is adjusting the incoming talent pools to adjust.
