Starting an online league

Hello, I am new to the game and a friend and I were looking to start an online league with just us two. I enabled online mode, and I put in his email and did the quick join email. He said he copied the code to the clip board but it did not work and he kept getting an error message. Is there something that I am missing or is there anyone who has had similar problems?

Copy the whole body of the email instead of the code.

A friend of mine and I are going through the setup now, doing a test league to figure out for when we do a bigger online league with 8-12 people we know. So hopefully we can help each other...
