Starting in the NHL, what do I do?
Taking your first seat in your chair in your new and shiny NHL office, now the success of a franchise and the dreams of its fans rest upon your shoulders.
What do you do? --- Starting a game I'm not sure what I should be doing, what to look at and take care of to get things rolling. I'm overwhelmed with possible things to do (that I know of. The possible things I should do that I don't know of are likely more). So what are the first things you do when you start out a game in the NHL? What business do you take care of? How do you keep yourself organized? Any help, tips, guidance, advice is much appreciated! |

It's going to depend on which team you chose.
Figure out your strengths and weaknesses first. Get a good idea of other teams' strengths and weaknesses. If you have cap and roster space, see what free agents might be available to help you. Otherwise, see if another team has a weakness that matches your strength and a strength that matches your weakness. You can probably trade to get a hole filled. Set your strategies to best suit your team. There's no preseason yet, so you can't test anything before the season begins for real. Keep an eye on your players after each game. Know who you'll bring up from the minors in case of injury. Plan for next year now. Do you have contracts expiring? Are there going to be other UFAs available next summer that you can use as an upgrade? Know as much as you can before the end of this season so you can strike fast in the off season. Make sure you have scouts watching the junior leagues and Europe. There really isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, just a lot of 'take this into consideration' |

I usually start off by setting the lineups, and seeing what wholes needs to be filled, then hitting the FA market (I've been managing in England up until now so no trading options) or trading to fill the pieces.
Roster is the most important part of the team. IMO at least. |
