Baseball Books

I'm looking for some good baseball book recommendations. I'd love to find a book(s) that discusses the evolution of baseball. I'm also really into reading about the history of the Minor Leagues for some reason. Any good suggestions out there? Audiobooks are a MAJOR PLUS (who has time to actually sit down and read anymore?)

I got this book as a kid, and it's what made me fall for the game. Each season's leaders, standings, rule changes, interesting stories, etc. It was written in 1992 (with an intro from Tim "What the **** is he talking about?" McGarver, so it only covers up through the 1991 season. Still, an amazing book.

Bill James' Historical Baseball Abstracts are the best source on baseball history I have ever seen.

For the early era, I always recommend "The Glory of Their Times" by Lawrence Ritter. You can get it on Amazon in just about any format.

One of my all time favorite books. Read it three times so far.

For more comprehensive information about players in the deadball era, I'd recommend the set - Deadball stars of the national league and Deadball stars of the American league.

So I downloaded the audio version of this book off of iTunes. All I can say is "WOW!". I'm sure the book is great, and I intend to read it too, but this audio version is a jewel. Instead of someone just reading the book out loud, it's the actual recordings of Ritter's interviews with each ballplayer that was covered in the book. This is pure audio gold. I listened to the entire 4+ hours all at once. Thank you so much for this recommendation!

"Crazy 08" by Cait Murphy is a great read. Short and intense, you can pound that one out in a couple of days. 1908 National League season. Giants. Cubs. Merkle's Boner. Tinker to Evers to Chance. Christy. Three Finger. It's great!
