I don't understand this at all. One can only assume that you cannot be forced back to a MLB minimum salary when you have made bigger money before.

Based on this I'd expect Hechavarria of the Marlins to get a similar contract next year.

Iglesias is represented by Scott Boras.

The 23-year-old Iglesias finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting after batting a combined .303/.349/.386 between the Red Sox and Tigers in 2013, but his offense predictably slipped with the Tigers. Most of damage at the plate with the Sox was the result of a .376 average on balls in play, and that number fell to .320 in Detroit while his strikeout rate jumped by eight percent. Iglesias wasn't acquired for his bat, however, and the Tigers are valuing him based on an elite glove at shortstop that he should have no trouble maintaining for years to come.

Barring a long-term deal, Iglesias will be in for a similar salary next offseason, as he won't be arbitration eligible until the 2015-16 offseason. He is under team control through the 2018 campaign.

this is a continuation of his existing arrangement, since he was traded. rule state that salary can't be dropped more than 20%.

80% * (8.25/4)= $1.65M so this is "his" minimum salary for the Tigers.

if Tigers release him, someone else could offer him less.

Dola so Hechavarria was on $10M/4yr so next year he gets 2.5*0.8=2.

What surprises me is that the player's agent accepts the max 20% cut. I'd be pushing for the same salary or some bonus in lieu.

for Hech, at that price i could see him being non-tendered.

not sure there is much negotiation to be done. i am actually surprise that about the tone of "have agreed", the only other choice is to not report and get $0, and you get no service time, so get nowhere closer to arbitration.

Or more than 30% over two seasons. So if his contract was extended, it couldn't be any lower than $1.44 million after the $1.65 million season.
