Until The Bullpen Got Tired
An epic, 13-inning pitching duel. Red Sox-Yankees, 2-2 after 13 innings. Unfortunately for the Yankees...they ran out of rested pitchers.
![]() This is particularly notable for 2 reasons. 1) How good the pitching duel was, then how ugly the 14th was. 2) This was September, so the Yankees had a full 40-man roster of pitchers to use...and still ran out. Some of them were tired from game 1 of the series (this was game 2 of a 3-game set), and had no day off prior to the series. Last edited by JMDurron; 12-21-2013 at 09:22 AM. |

Must have been low-stamina pitchers.

The starter (78 STA, fresh) threw 113 pitches in 5.2 IP. Reliever #1 (8 STA, fresh) threw 38 pitches in 2 innings. Reliever #2 (6 STA, 4 pitches previous day) threw 36 pitches in 1 inning. Reliever #3 (13 STA, 25 pitches 3 days prior and 11 pitches the previous day) threw 42 pitches in 2.1 IP. Reliever #4 (3 STA, fresh) threw 47 pitches in 2 IP. Reliever #5 (10 STA, 32 pitches 2 days prior and 28 pitches the day before, came in tired) threw 14 pitches in 0.0 IP. Reliever #6 (14 STA, 48 pitches 3 days prior and 42 pitches the day before, came in tired) threw 16 pitches in 0.2 IP.
Reliever #7 (10 STA, 30 pitches the day prior, came in tired) threw 55 pitches in 0.1 IP, allowing 7 ER on 5 H and 5 BB. Basically yes, lots of low-stamina relievers, who had also been ridden pretty hard in the previous 3 days. 5.2 IP from the starter and 4 fresh relievers were enough to get them 13 IP, though. |

I read this thread late this afternoon. One or two game days later I had a similar situation in my league. Not my team and not quite as dramatic but I liked the symetry so I thought I would share with you.

Yep, looks like the same deal. A good team outlasts a bad team's bullpen.
Your Miami Sharks get bonus points for giving their fans a gut punch, though. A 3-run rally in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings...only to be obliterated in the 12th. |

I just went 11 Innings vs the STL Cardinals My team ranks #1 in everything. Cardinals are 10th in Bullpen ERA. Jackman has a STA of 6.
