Does this Trade make any sense?
I am running a historical simulation, I started out as the expansion 1993 Florida Marlins. We're into July and the team is doing well, so I decided to take a look at the Trading Block to see if I might pick up any pieces for the stretch drive. My catcher, Tom Pagnozzi, has been hitting well, but I was intrigued to see Darren Daulton on the block. He will be a free agent at season end. Philadelphia is in 5th place in the division, but still only 6 games back at 41-43.
I haven't made any trades yet, but I know the AI can be taken advantage of, so I wanted to limit trades to One for One. Trades are set to Hard/Favor Prospects. It looks like they're willing to give up their cleanup hitting 4.5 star Daulton for a minor league 1 star RP making 600k. (daulton makes 560k) Please see if this makes sense to anyone. I also am posting Pagnozzi's profile. His numbers are much better than Daulton's but who knows how long he can keep that up for. |

Nichols would have two more years of arbitration after this season is up. I really doubt thats why the AI wants him... Would they get a draft pick for losing Daulton. I don't think his stats are even good enough to get them a good pick.

0.2 WAR over half the year does not sound like a 5 star guy. They have soured on him, and will dump him to any one who will take him..
i am surprised they are willing to take salary back, usually it`s for a low minors guys. |

I think you can safely ignore those ratings on Daulton. He is clearly not as good as they imply.
That does not seem like a ridiculous trade to me, since he is a free agent and they are getting someone with a couple more years of control... assuming they have no plans to resign him... and I don't think I would. It also works for you as he isn't a big upgrade over Pagnozzi but he is over Olsen AND you wouldn't feel the loss of Nichols with Graeme Lloyd there itching to get called up. I would say to pull the trigger. |

Thank you both. I am a constant reader (several times per day) of the forums, infrequent poster. I find you fellows to be amongst the more reasonable posters so I salute you, and I will make the deal.
I guess I was just caught up looking at his great ratings and didn't pay enough attention to his awful stats. I can't shake the concept that he will, eventually, return to his "true" skills. Hence my fear Pagnozzi will fall off the map. Last edited by saturn2187; 12-30-2013 at 04:16 PM. |

the one thing i hadn't considered is the draft pick, since i only played under 2012CBA. If there is any chance he is a B FA, this makes no sense for them, without salary relief. |

yup. it says Type A free agent. Safe to assume its not a good deal for them then? I wont pull the trigger after all...

not sure how good the prediction is in OOTP, but in RL someone with a predicted A type as of July, traded for a middling reliever with a higher salary to a contender would be a generally poor deal.
i guess if your reliever had options it would allow the Braves to send him to minors and save some money, but then take a low level prospect (this is what i would offer).... i even check about turning your reliever as a starter, but he as no stamina. this is clearly a player dump gone wrong (i get that sometimes where AI will list a bunch of players they want, but there will also be a 0.5 star reliever listed first... i just ignore that one... except when trading with Washington (not a problem for you yet).... when Washington, always take the offer that are bad for them, it`s the rule. |

not sure he is that much of an upgrade, because of the negative D at a premium position. I personally would rather have Olson, but my teams are usually strong D and Bullpen, which i find under valued in OOTP solo... i just finished a year where i had 5 gold glove winners... thankfully OOTP doesn`t alllow me to give bonuses on those.... :-)

i was also able to get the to accept Greg Olson and Jack Armstrong (another 1 star major leaguer on my big league roster with arbitration pending)
Morris not doing particularly well. |

yup. well having an ERA of 6.23 doesn't help much. 3.59 run support per game.
Anyway, i got out of this thread that it may not be such a big "steal" after all.... I was just looking for verification that it wouldn't be a complete Rip off. I'm even considering not making the deal. I've got the NL's top pitching staff and 3rd best defense, so maybe by giving up Olson i'm sacrificing that. On the other hand, we have the worst offense.... so Daulton would help. I'm just confusing myself now. Last edited by saturn2187; 12-30-2013 at 06:36 PM. |

It's been my experience that the Compensation Type that is shown in the contract screen tends to update in the offseason. His "A" is based on last year, where he was pretty good. My guess is, with current form, he'd be a no-comp FA.
