The Coastal Baseball Leauge

I am pretty sure this is my first dynasty thread. This is based on a solo league i have played several times.

Coastal Baseball League
The Coastal Baseball League is a 10 team professional baseball league. The league was formed in 1918 with the first season of play beginning in 1920.

Description and History
The Coastal Baseball League formed as a spinoff of idea from the Crandall City League. The Crandall City League was organized by Oliver Hoffman in 1905 as a competitive men’s league hosted in the city of Crandall. All players were from the city of Crandall.

The league quickly became very popular and competitive and grew from the original four teams to twelve in 1910. It was in 1913 that local business owner and well know player Wilbur Mooney started recruiting players from other cities to come and play on his team. This move would lead to the league’s first rivalry being formed between Wilbur Mooney’s Indians and Alexander Garrison’s Cardinals. Garrison despised the way Mooney would bring in out of town players to play in the league and wanted nothing more than to beat him with the home grown talent of Crandall.

While players in the city league were not paid many accused Mooney of giving these recruited players special treatment and perks for playing on his team. These accusations lead to the league creator Oliver Hoffman to enforce the good sportsmanship and spirit rule by banning Mooney for life from league play in 1915. Although the accusations were never proven true Mooney’s Indians lost several of the players to local leagues after his ban.

In the fall of 1916 after the City League season had ended Oliver Hoffman formed a sort of Crandall City League All-Star team to travel to the cities Oyster City, Leechburg and Mount Cove to play pickup games against local men’s teams. The games quickly became very popular and the outside cities found that they could raise money to support their local teams by charging a small fee to watch these games. On one Sunday afternoon the city of Mount Cove had to turn away fans from the game as the stands were full to watch the Crandall All-Stars take on the Mount Cove Beavers.

One of those fans that were turned away was Oyster Creek lawyer Otto Gaddis. Gaddis was a huge baseball fan and often traveled to Crandell to watch a full slate of games on Sunday afternoons. After seeing the crowds that were coming out to the ballbark Gaddis had an idea. Gaddis thought that if he had enough support from each city that he could form a new league consisting of 6-8 cities where teams would travel from city to city playing each other for the league title.

Gaddis who was a huge fan of Wilbur Mooney during his playing days in the Crandell City League approached Wilbur about this idea. Mooney who was still banned from the City League loved Gaddis’s idea and talked with several of the city leaders about supporting such a league.

In the summer of 1918 Mooney had drummed up enough interest from each city that Gaddis called a meeting in Oyster Creek to form the Coastal Baseball League. To the surprise of Gaddis and Mooney 10 cities sent representatives to be part of this newly formed league.

Otto Gaddis was voted to be the league’s first Commissioner and basic rules were set such as salary structure, roster sizes and a start date of April 4th 1920 for the first season. This would allow enough time for each city to build or expand on ballparks to support the newly formed teams and the fans they were hoping would come to the games.

Each team will be owned by the city it plays in and will name a general manager to handle all team operations. There will be no limits in player recruitment; if a General Manager liked a player he could sign him. Once a player is signed he is owned by that team and would not be allowed to play for another team in the league unless he was traded or released.

Each city will be solely responsible for its team and how it is to be managed. The league office is there to enforce the rules in the best interest of the league and not to manage teams. If the cities want their teams to be successful they will have to spend money and promote the team. This could come from sponsorships from local companies to charging gate fees for the games. It was up to the city leaders to support and grow their team.

More to come............

I like being able to follow a league from its inception. Count me in for yours. It looks like it will be a lot of fun, and it's obvious you've put some time and creativity into your "backstory."

Good luck with it, and most of all, have fun!

Nice start, looking forward to seeing how this goes.
[BTW I think you need to edit the "Coastal Eastern Division" list with logos and names, as Leechburg is listed as "Leachburg"]

This is so unique and has an incredible old timey feel. Kudos on the map. This comes off as though it is something you had in your head awhile and no detail has been overlooked. Very thorough, well thought out and being executed quite well thus far. Loving it.

After the 1919 Crandall City League had finished teams started the task of recruiting players to the new league for the 1920 season. With construction still being competed on many of the new ballparks Gaddis turned to the city of Crandall to hold open tryouts that all ten franchises could attend. These tryouts would be held on October 14th 1919 in Crandall.

Flyers about the tryouts began to circulate throughout the area and players were offered a bonus of $50 if they signed a contract that day. Owners thought this incentive would bring more players to the tryout and pay for their travel cost to Crandall.

In the spring of 1920 Otto Gaddis turned to The Coastal Dispatch to help promote the league. The Coastal Dispatch agreed to run a team preview for each team listing the team’s roster with a scouting rating for each player. If the league was going to be successful then it was going to have to promote its players. These scout rankings would give the fans the idea each players talent in hitting, defense, pitchers arm and pitching control.

Interesting Twink Mooney joined the team that is expected to be league champs giving them a legitimate rotation. Can't wait for the Crandall-Springwillow matches

As preseason workouts came to a close Wilbur Mooney gathered the 17 men that had made his team’s final roster in the clubhouse. “Gentlemen” Mooney would say in his gruff scowling voice “As of today you are all being paid to play baseball, congratulations... Just so you all understand though, this is a job and you are getting paid to do a job. If any of you do not perform well on the job you will be off this team faster than you can say Giants!” “I built this team finish first and that is what I expect out of all you, a first place championship this year”.

This same scene was repeated in many clubhouses before the start of the season but Mooney had a way of delivering a message like no other. You could hear the passion for the game in voice; he loved the game of baseball and wanted his players to have that same love.

Oliver Hoffman had a much different message to his team in Oyster Creek. Oliver loved the game but more so than his love for the game Oliver loved the dynamics of a team. Oliver talked about what a team or being part of a team should mean to each of his players. “17 guys pulling in one direction is what creates a team, not one man thinking for himself. If we are going to win this league we all have to be playing for the same goal”.
