Adjusting league totals, modifiers, etc.

This may be a rookie question and I think I've asked it a ton of times, neevr truly understanding the answers.

I want to be able to change my league's stats I guess. I'd like less home runs and doubles with a few more singles. I just want to make a league slightly more pitcher-centric. But I'm never quite sure how to do it correctly.

For the current league I want to make it would start out with only four teams and then I would add more over time. What settings, totals, modifiers, etc. do I adjust and how do I adjust them to get what I'm looking for?

Help appreciated. I've just never had a real grasp on playing with the stats my league produces so I usually leave it alone.

It's pretty straight forward: if you want home runs to be half of what they are normally, set the HR modifier to .5......if you want them to be 50% more, set it to 1.500.....same for all the modifiers.....your particular set of players will make the results not be exactly what you set the modifier too, though, and this will especially be the case in a small 4 team league. But over time, it will even out.

So what do the league totals do? Is that just a different, more complicated way of getting the same result?

League totals are the baseline. They establish the expected rate of occurrence per AB of all of the outputs of which HR are just one. Actual league totals (in your case a pro-rated version) are important because they reflect specific conditions, often geographical or physical that produce different rates of occurrence. The PCL for example has different rates for certain stats than MLB or perhaps the IL due to heat altitude and cement infields. Modifying a MLB set of LT for the PCL would not produce the expected results.

As QD says you use the modifiers to directly affect an expected total such as HR.

One cautionary note. Making large changes in certain outputs can have a cascading effect throughout the league ie not enough LDP and GDP will result in more runs scored and higher ERA.

I would not alter the totals, even if you are playing something other than an MLB environment. Setting them up is NOT straightforward (i.e. lowering a total RAISES the output). You can get anywhere you want to go by leaving the default totals alone and just changing the modifiers.

What I've always done if I want to change the totals is select a historical year that roughly provides the numbers I'm looking for, then use the modifiers to tweak them as necessary.
