While I agree that the team would be better placed in a market that actually gave a damn about the product (you know, like most businesses operate), there's some items that help to make it a bare barn.
Pre-season - Personally I never saw the appeal of paying full price for a game that doesn't matter, so not going to fault folks for not watching it. Date and time- It's a game scheduled at 2:30pm on a monday. Not only is a terrible time and date, but if I'm in Florida with some free time in early September in the afternoon, I'm at the beach, not in a barn that reminds me of Toronto in Janaury. Plus the folks that own the building the Panthers are in also own the team, and I'm told they make a nice set of coin for other events at the building like concerts and such. I could be wrong, but I've seen it mentioned multiple times when such stories come out. So unlike the Phoenix debacle, Florida isn't hurting for money.....well as much anyways. Plus Phoenix spent five years being propped up by the league instead of being moved. If Florida went down the same road, do they get the Atlanta treatement, or the Phoenix one?

The reason why the game was that early was because it was when the young prospects were playing and the people in the stands were their scouts. The teams played a double header that day.

Depends. How quickly can lack of fan interest bleed Loria's finances dry?

He got a sweetheart deal on the Marlins' new stadium. Combine that with revenue sharing and I think the club is quite profitable. (Heck, it was profitable enough before it got its new stadium, based on the leaked financial statements from a couple of years ago.)

The team is being sold, so I'd say, as long as they new guys get the arena, then they will remain. As long as Bettman is running the league, you won't see the NHL abandon the "Southern strategy" completely. Phoenix and Florida will be propped up and sol, and resold, as long as possible. Tampa Bay, Dallas and Carolina have been successful on the ice. What I'll never understand, is why teams like the Coyotes and Panthers built their arenas outside of the metropolitan area. Panthers should be playing at the American Airlines Arena with the Heat. Coyotes should have built an arena in Phoenix, not Glendale. (I guess the Suns' US Airways Center is not hockey-friendly). |

Just to update this thread. The Panthers were sold last week for $250 million. So I would say there is a very good chance they will remain in south Florida.
I also have to ask. And this is not trying to start a flame war. This is just me seriously asking. Why does it seem that Canadians wish to see hockey fail in non traditional hockey markets? |
