Giving up Baseball
So my top prospect, Anthony Rendon, just decided with 2 games left in spring training, and me giving him more ABs than anyone else this spring - preparing to make him a starter this season for me, that he would give up baseball to pursue a basketball career because he was tired of being stuck in the minors.
It was presented as a career ending injury. There has to be better logic in this. If you want to give him a CEI and make it a car crash, lightning strike, or have him senselessly mauled by a pack of wolves - that's fine. But for him to quit because he's tired of being in the minors two days before he would have been a starter on my major league roster just rubs me the wrong way. |

Sounds like a storyline.

Turn off storylines when you create a league.

It does sound like a storyline, and the "tired of being in the minors" is just the flavor text that goes with it.

How many more threads do we have to see before this feature is turned off by default? I can't imagine why this is allowed to continue. If a player turns it on that's fine but not knowing that it exists (very possible) and having it mess up a league is just not right.

What's even funnier is that Rendon dropped basketball after his freshman year of high school to focus on baseball.

I actually don't mind a little random flavor. But when the story doesn't make sense in the context of what is going on - that's where I bristle.
Again, if the game wants to randomly end the careers of one of my players, I'm fine with it, as long as the same happens to every team. But just have the curtain match the drapes, so to speak. Let him get hit by a meteor before he decides that he doesn't fit into my plans. In real life, the manager or GM would have called him into the office weeks before and told him he was penciled in as the opening day starter. Since the storyline feature is completely new to me (I'm a convert from 6.5) what else can I expect to see? I did see one news blurb about Albert Pujols calling a team meeting for the Angels when they weren't playing well last season. I liked seeing that. But I can't recall any other specific "stories" from my first season. edit: Oh - and the league's rules were changed after the first season, saying that the number of arbitration years had been voted to change. I went in and changed it back. Last edited by pumph; 07-18-2013 at 10:58 PM. |

That last thing is from league evolution. Turn that off right after you turn off storylines.

I understand your being upset, and I don't disagree. On the other hand, since you're okay with the potential result (CEI) just change the flavor text in your mind.

it gets annoying if you need to create story false from the game in your mind.
For example I tend to create 3 brothers where 1 is a superstar and the other two are pretty good. The problem is that I'm the only one who knows they are brothers. Back onto subject, I agree that storylines and league evolution should be off by default.

For clarification purposes, is the game actually giving the player a CEI or is this something mentioned in the storyline? If the game is giving players a CEI, and if it's no trouble, could you post a screenshot of Anthony Rendon's player page? Thanks!

I got a message telling me that Rendon had suffered a CEI. When I went to my news, there was a story saying that Rendon had decided to give up baseball.
No player was injured. Rendon's player page says "Retired"

I hate CEIs in general, especially to the under 30, simply because nearly any player would attempt a comeback, maybe 5 comebacks before they finally give up. So, I generally hit the editor unless the injury is something really worthy of a retirement. I try to give them some suitable ratings hits (my discretion, though). Course, with this one, I'd immediately get him "healthy" out of anti-AI spite.

Pumph,
Thanks for posting that screenshot. I've got good news. I logged this in the Bug Report forum and it has been fixed. In the final release, this should work as intended. When the player decides to forgo baseball to focus on something different the storyline should reflect the same thing as the player's profile and not just say the player has a CEI when the player is actually retired.

But if I'd done that, I wouldn't have had A-Rod retire to take up a career in broadcasting, just a week after he didn't retire at the end of 2014.
